As the topic name suggests. I did some search, but found a similar topic related to RPGs only, this one is for all games.
Underrated as in: - Isn't talked about much - Not many people played it - People say it sucks - Low advertising / no advertising (you can post Indie games as well)
For me, it would be - Original War - I don't see, why people don't play this more. It has an awesome story, awesome gameplay, it's just totally awesome, get it!
- Men of War - It's Company of Heroes, just 1000x times better. You don't build your base, but you have to use tactics more, and the environment is 99% destructable (Unlike CoH)
- The Moon Project - How could I forget this one I bet none of you ever played it. It's a space RTS, where you can (iirc) combine some parts into units, build awesome bases, research stuff etc.
myth: the total codex - wonderful RTS focusing more on tactics and formations, with probably one of the most entertaining stories. I know some people on TL have played it, but otherwise I don't think it was insanely popular.
Torins Passage - First game I ever owned (got it when I was 5 or 6). Very fun to play, extremely interesting story. I still play it every now and then.
Total Annihilation: Kingdoms - Really fun RTS with a really unique style, especially when it came to the 4 different kingdoms you could be.
Vampires the Masquerade Bloodlines. I think it's generally seen as a very good game among the people who know it, but I don't think that many people have heard of it. The first two acts are absolutely brilliant, one of the best RPG experiences I've ever had. Unfortunately the game turns into a hack and slash in the later acts (I think they ran out of money or something), but the game's easily worth playing for the first two acts alone.
Amnesia. Not sure whether that really fits this thread as it's being talked about a lot on TL, but I hadn't heard of it outside of TL and it's an absolutely amazing game. By far the most scared I've ever been playing a game.

It is indeed a great game, same with VtM Redemption You might be intrested to know that the creaters of EVE Online have merges (I think) with White Wolf Entertainment and started development of World of Darkness, an MMO set in the Vampire: the Masquerade universe.
Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far. I played this game for hours on end, I basically had all the maps memorized. Its an ultra-tactical RTS game, with almost zero strategy elements. It was ridiculously hard, but yet really rewarding. I loved managing to hold off giant armies with just a mg42 2 shutzen(german infantry) units, 1 panther, and a mortar or two.
With so few horror games out there, this stands out like a lighthouse. Brilliant atmosphere and gameplay makes playing this game an unforgettable experience. Just do yourself a favour and dim the lights and put your headphones on.
Demon's Souls is a fantastic game. Game of the Year for 2009 in my opinion. Yes, it is unforgiving. No, it is not too hard. If you think the game is too hard then you are doing it wrong. Most people start the game and quit when they die to the first enemy's leap attack. Remember, side-step + back-stab for great justice.
Fallout 3 : Lots of ppl bash it but personnaly, it's the best release of the Fallout series Final Fantasy 12: same ^^
Ikaruga: I think not enough ppl played this game since it was released on the Dream cast, then the game cube. It's probably the best "Space shooter" (i don't know how you call this type, shoot 'em up?) I have ever played

KKND2: Krossfire is definitely my pick. An RTS from 1998 set in a post-apocalyptic future with human survivors, killer robots and mutants duking it out.
Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 was overshadowed by a couple of games that came out around the same time it did itself. I loved the game very much, even if it was a little anime cliche. It still had amazing game play and the story wasn't totally awful.

Although your username makes you look like a 14 year old, i approve of your fantastic post. KKND was the shit!
My main pick would be Fallout new vegas, i've still heard people say it sucks horribly but i thought it was much better than fallout 3 which was a disaster compared to the previous releases.
Oh, and i also think oblivion is awesome. (not liking the main quest though)
System Shock 1 & 2 - It's critically acclaimed but not many ppl know about it.
Circuit's Edge (1989) - Loosely based on George Alec Effinger's novel When Gravity Falls. I found this game around 2002 but found it immensely enjoyable to play.
Mines of Titan (1992) - One of the first games I really got into and enjoyed.
Romance of the 3 Kingdoms III - Another game that may not be that well known to western audiences. It is absolutely brilliant.
Sango Fighter - Not as good as Street Fighter but quite fun nevertheless.
mount & blade. It's a not-so-old "medieval simulation" in a realm where you actually play an rpg, but you can still build up an army. It's quite good, although its graphics engine is kinda bad... Still, a lot of fun!
Elasto Mania - most of the people I've met have played this game(or its predecessor Across) at least during one period of their life. I'm one of the few who really got stuck with it.
Solid gameplay + fantasy aspects When it came out, all the reviewers hated on it for a slew of technical bugs and for that reason alone, despite praising the gameplay, they gave it a 6/10 all over the board.
The weird thing was, i bought it on release, and didn't encounter a single one of those bugs they were talking about. Makes me think they were impatient or something and somehow botched the installation. Makes me sad that they ruined arkane studios chance to make another game

I fully agree - this game is great -, my brother got it and I'm so sad I can't play it anymore since he moved

I have to quote this, I haven't seen any commercials or any advertisements, but this game had my soul for a very loooong time. Play, die, progress, rinse and repeat.
Arcade Volleyball (a dos game. takes less than 50kb and can be downloaded free from the internet!)
Fifa 2000 The last playable Fifa series for me. I could never adjust to the controls in the next series. They changed what keys did in fifa2001 and up. Unfortunately, only ipx or serial cable or win 98 or a combination makes the game playable on multiplayer.
Atomic Bomberman Levels of fun through the ceiling in multiplayer.
Psychonauts (and pretty much everything else from DoubleFine). Creative, hilarious, and mind-bending platformy explorer. + Show Spoiler +
RibbitKing. The only golf (sort of) game I enjoy, mostly because it's flat-out absurd. + Show Spoiler +
Custom Robo. Fairly popular Japanese series that didn't get much life in the States - one GC and one DS release, I believe. Hours of fun in VS Mode. + Show Spoiler +

While I agree that the ending was quite disappointing, the journey towards it was AMAZING :D I never had to grind too, just do quests and you'll be fine.
Sacrifice (2000) One of the most original rts games I've ever seen, visually stunning for a ten year old game. Wide critical acclaim but didn't sell very well. I highly recommend you watch TotalBiscuit's review video:
Where to start! This game could most simply be described as Eve Online as a single player game. Except you can dogfight, and automate/remotely control freighters to do those boring ass trade runs. It offers something, for now, rather unique as far as sandboxes go. It was not widely successful for some very obvious reasons:
60% barrier of entry- You really have to put in some effort to understand this game. The tutorial is unsuccessful, and the lacking story only covers about 15% of the potential of the game. In an environment where GTA is the king of sandbox, the much deeper mechanics of the X universe would go unseen by most critics. 20% lack of advertisement- Anyone who has even heard of this game probably heard about it from another gamer. 20% technical issues/polish- The X3 universe is perhaps a shot at an unachievable ideal in sandbox gaming. Sectors exist when you're not in them. Civilian ships carry and sell supplies, pirates pirate, wars are fought, and industry is churning. All of this is processed in real time, and puts a severe strain on your cpu. At some point, when the universe gets complex enough within a character's lifetime, the game just bogs down. There are also several compromises made to streamline this processing that affect the continuity of the economy model.
Despite these drawbacks, it offers an experience you really just can't get anywhere else. Perhaps most interesting are the stories that can be told within its universe by someone with sufficient creativity. I probably had as much fun following Nuklear Slug as I did playing the game myself. Plus, views like this are always worth a moment's consideration.

I hear ya, but honestly playing with it with my roommates was some of the most fun times I have had. Granted, I am not a big "storyline" person.. honestly if the game play is smooth nice and interesting that is all I need. (Let it be known I have yet to even touch the sc2 campaign)

The x series would absolutely baller status if there were more than 7 quests in each game, and once the "campaign" ended, there was more to do besides build your own self sustaining sector and go blow shit up

I'm just going to quote this because it is exactly what I was going to say.
Demon's Souls is an amazing game. The combat is very precise and yes unforgiving. If you are wearing armor, don't expect to be rolling around and dodging like a ninja. Play carefully and strategically and you will prevail eventually.
Advent Rising for the Xbox. I had a ton of fun with this game.
Sure the graphics were a tad bit rough, the character models had gangly legs. I give those objections credit.
People didn't like the flick targetting. I found no problems with it personally. People said it looked like Halo, I can certainly see why, but I still say it has its own style. It was a great game in its own right that got blasted by reviewers who couldn't see past a few flaws to the great potential underneath.
It was supposed to be a trilogy that got cut short at 1 game. Very disappointing.
And virtual skipper 5 online. http://www.virtualskipper-game.com/vsk5/ A free sailing simulation. If you put in the effort to understand all the rules of match racing it can be extremely competitive .
Chrono Cross - Playstation Life Force - Nintendo Legend of the Dragoon - Playstation Star Ocean - Playstation * phenomenal game Space Rangers 2 Reboot - PC Darkcloud - Playstation 2 Jade Cocoon 2 - Playstation 2 Disgea 3 - Playstation 3
I know it is just a class-based TPS game like any other, but the AvA just hooked me for some time. So much fun competing for territory along with your alliance.
And also +1 for Trine. I had a lot of fun with that game. It is a little short though, but still worth the money.

Oh man this game is like crack. Probably the best space sim I've ever played. Its a shame there probably won't be a X4.
Galactic Civilizations 2: Twilight of the Arnor. It was an expansion to a somehwat unknown TBS game, and is absolutely spectacular. It looks great yet runs even on terrible hardware, and the amount of freedom the devs give you is absolutely ridiculous. The AI is definately above its competitors as well, unfortunately there is no Gal civ 3 planned .
if this was "overrated games that I actually thought sucked" it'd be so much easier for me lol.
I really liked shattered horizon. It was a really neat concept that never really took off since it really was a bit more of a tech demo tahn a game. there just wasnt enough content in it when it luanched. later they patched it to double the map-pool and added in multiple weapons (before there was JUST the assault rifle), but I feel it was too late and the game is already pretty much dead.
/badass trailer
also I know they arent really "underrated" since they received critical acclaim and I think did alright in sells, but the 1st 2 brothers in arms games were amazing. I feel tehy never got enough love since they were WW2 FPS games, but they are still probably the best implementation of squad control and tactics in a FPS ever. its really too bad that the 3rd brothers in arms game was just ass.

Good game, made me rage in the early days. But after you know what's going on it's fairly rewarding. Definitely worth playing.

It's a turn-based game from the age of shareware, supposedly like master of orion (wouldn't know). You tech to get civilization-like technologies, build ships and planet improvements and space improvements. But the cool thing was, you customized all your ships and races and could upgrade the designs so a part had the newest technology - or sometimes a cheaper old technology.

agree with custom robo, really fun game that required a lot of strategy if you dont use the gay illegal parts
Minesweeper. This classic game about a disgruntled ex-technician pitted against a mysterious foe was not very highly rated for its time. However, it was a classic that endured for ages.
It's definitely a forgotten gem, <3 you for mentioning it! The sad part is i never managed to play multiplayer with it i heard it was very good.
Speaking of 4Xgames I would recommend Master of Orion 3, because at a time of release it was full of bugs and lacked many promised features. But after playing it with some community fixes and mods i found it to be very fun.
Also i find rougelike genre to be underrated by normal gamers, yes graphics are kind of bad (only ASCII symbols) but if you use your imagination, it can be mad fun since most rougelikes have very good gameplay, content, and replayability. They are also quite hard, witch is a definitive plus.
my fav's are: ADOM, DoomRL, BerserkRL, and (not really underrated) Dwarf Fortress.
Mount and Blade, best medieval combat game around. Theres no feeling that can compare to fighting off 3 or more guys at once and killing them all, its just so much fun with crazy blocks and swings flying every which way.
Skies of Arcadia Legends for the gamecube. One of the best RPG's i've ever played with a great storyline which a lot of RPG's don't have anymore. Also I know Final Fantasy is a well known series but Final Fantasy VIII is really overlooked.
Ikaruga was already mentioned, so I consider this thread complete. I will probably end up selling off most of my console gaming collection, but I'll never ever part with Ikaruga.
Also, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is the best game on the DS
Minecraft!? My first impression of when I saw the gameplay wasn't so good. But when I played it (multiplayer), it was so fun and addicting. Now I can't get enough of it.
God Hand is the greatest game ever made. Hated on by reviewers because it was hard, and gaming journalism is full of whiny babies.
Made by Clover Studios, sadly capcom in all their fucked up wisdom decided to close Clover. I haven't purchased a capcom game since Dead rising looks pretty fun.
Yes making more fuckign megaman and other shitty remakes, and stop making fun and unique IPs. I get so mad.
YESSSSS that was so long ago but I remember emulating that when I was younger. My brother downloaded it 'cause he didn't even know what it was and it was SO EPIC.

I played that a lot, it was a brilliant intense game. Never played against other people though.
I still remember this one time on one of the Stalingrad maps when their Tiger was dominating everything except I hunkered down inside the factory and then I ambushed and owned their Tiger with like my 1 rocketeer when it chased my stuff into the factory and then held the map.
I still remember it cause it was like one of my most triumphant moments, those things were beastly strong that early.
edit: Oh wait, that was in The Russisn Front which was the Close Combat that came right after A Bridge Too Far. They were both awesome though.
A game that had fun gameplay, an interesting (and funny) storyline, was huge, varied missions, excellent weapons, and managed to be a total flop despite all of it.
I don't know how many people played this but this was sooo much fun when I was kid... then I lost the CD...
Theres a remake that runs on the VegaStrike engine (opengl.) Theres a few versions, one thats basically the same, one that is somewhat different, and one that adds so much stuff that its basically a different game.
1) Magic Knight Rayearth - Sega Saturn (last official game ever made for the Saturn) 2) Shenmue - Dreamcast (not really underrated but a really amazing game)
I actually just dusted off my old systems to play those two games and I still find them really fun.
One of the last playstation games to be released. It pushed the hardware to its limits. This game has a great subtle story.
I also agree with
This is another of my favorite games that I will go back and play every couple years or so.
I'm not sure if Demon's Souls should be underrated. It was pretty much game of the year. Sure, I'll hear flak about the game here and there, but I really don't know anyone in real life that doesn't love Demon's Souls.

I got the Men of War demo from Steam because I saw so many people on Youtube having fun; but the demo made it seem pretty bad. I found that any unit I didn't explicitly watch stood around and got shot at, without fighting back or even seeking cover. I checked the Rules of Engagement, and they were all on Fire at Will.
Is the demo just a poor representation of the game (which it might be, there's a disclaimer at the end to that effect), or is it actually that broken?
edit to stay on topic: One game I really loved was Hardwar. All I remember about it, was that for some reason, humanity was on Titan, and it was lawless, and basically you flew around in your own custom spaceship, trying to make a living by either lawful (bounty-hunting) or criminal (killing people and taking their shit) means. You could even have your own hangar, and use it as a store to sell your stolen stuff. I think there was a plot, but I know I didn't get very far. I remember killing someone who was supposed to give me one of my first missions, and being around 7-8 years old, I didn't want to give up my cool ship with the awesome lasers to go make a new save file.

I actually went back and played Soulblighter not that long ago and was pleasantly surprised at how well it stood up. The textures are atrocious, but other than that it really is still a great game. That was the first game i played online and i was unhealthily addicted. If only Bnet 2.0 was that good...
any1 who knows me prolly know this already but i LOVE windjammers
play it on ggpo every once in awhile. as far as console games that i've loved but noticed it was extremely popular for ps2
probably sunk 140+ hrs in it but its so so so worth it. for ps3
probably 200+ hours distributed amongst all my characters. and honestly i truly believe if they tweaked teh game out/released an expansion pack that expanded multi-player settings/interactions/partying this game would be absolutely fuqqin awesome (already awesome for me to begin with)

"This Battle Belongs To WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" yea dw3 was def. my most favorite dynasty warriors. loved wu (particularly gan ning and zhou yu)
1. Vagrant Story (someone already mentioned it, but it was a genius game) 2. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur 3. Quest 64 (also already mentioned, very simple RPG but loads of fun) 4. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (omfg the guns were so ridiculous, and the dismemberment) 5. Blast Corps 6. Hydro Thunder (I need to get the remake, but playing this in arcades was a blast) 7. Star Wars Rogue Squadron series (I miss Factor 5)
I feel that Chaos Overlords is still the best turn-based strategy game ever made for PC, although I was never a fan of MoO's complexity. It is old, and it is free, so everyone should at least try it. The AI is incredibly smart: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/339/Chaos Overlords.html
I'll second the Close Combat love. Those games were wonderful - it's a refreshing change to play a game where often you're fighting a battle you can't hope to win - you just have to do the best you can. Not sure how well balanced it is competitively, but it was damn fun - one player got the early missions with everything in their favour, then the other players armour division arrived in support and it's completely flipped around.
Back on the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis for Americans) I really liked a game called General Chaos. It was funny, interesting squad combat at that time.
On the PS1, the Unholy War was a strange but great game with some interesting mechanics. As a kid I sunk a lot of time with friends into Twisted Metal 1, but not sure how it holds up now.
I loved Armoured Core. Like being a mechwarrior merc with great jumpjets.
Mech commander 1 was pretty cool in the early levels. Some real 'oh fuck' moments when a big enemy mech appeared and it felt like you had nothing which could stand up to it.
Hmm, I'm rambling a bit (have been given an unexpected holiday due to bureaucracy and am a little drunk). Anyway, those games are good.
Also, some of the warhammer games were good. Shadow of the horned rat was way ahead of its time (and impossibly hard), while spacehulk was slow but scary as hell.
Probably one of the best platformers of the last half-decade. Reviewers said it was too hard. Lol.
This. I'm kind of afraid that even though they're now independently developing Monster Tale(which is coming out in a few months), they took that criticism to heart and neutered it. This game will be metroidvania-style too, so they might have added significant grinding :/.

I gotta go with this one, even though I had fun with the game most people pissed all over it because it was held to a higher standard than most games because of the first deus ex. It might not be an excellent game but I dont think it should have gotten the shit it got and probably wouldnt if it wasnt a deus ex sequel. I found it a good way to kill a few days, a fun game.
Minecraft I know this is getting a lot of attention now, but whenever I mention or show this to friends, they start bashing it and hate on the graphics.
Final Fantasy X-2 Yeah, the story was bad. Very, very, very bad. Worst story in a FF game so far, but the combat was pretty damn awesome.
Soldat - funfunfun scroll shooter with free online and a free online download here: http://soldat.thd.vg/en/ you have to pay to customize, but i never did, 10 different weapons, 4 backup weapons, a few grenades, and even has zombie mods, i have some really great memories of this game haha
My Top 5 Underrated Games. (in no particular order, sorry if I double up on someone elses)
1. Rock & Roll Racing (SNES) this game really got swept under the rug... the company, Silicon & Synapse, now known as Blizzard (lol) made a top scrolling (RC PRO AM Style) racing game back in the early 90's. and it was amazingly fun to play. I recommend everyone to play it for nostalgia purposes.
2. Adventures of Lolo (NES) this was a puzzle game released in 1989 by HAL, and boy... was it a thinker... it managed to spawn 2 sequels, but never made the transition to the SNES. it was a niche game that never really took off. but the developers believed in it. and for those that played this game, will remember it very well.
3. Blast Corps (N64) Now this is a game that should be remade. the concept was completely original, unbelievable replay value. and despite a heavy marketing campaign from it's developer, Rare (Creators of Banjo Kazooie/Goldeneye/Donkey Kong Country) it never had the deserved response that it really should have received.
4. Wario Land (VIRTUAL BOY LOLOL) Holy crap, talk about an amazing game on the WORST POSSIBLE SYSTEM. it was the first to utilize 2 planes of movement on a platformer, and was difficult, but not to the point of frustration. luckily, emulators have come around, so that you can play this without having your eyeballs bleed after 20 minutes... I recommend this VERY HIGHLY.
Rise of the Triad (DOS) In my opinion, this is the most underrated FPS game out there. It's worst flaw was the fact that it used the Wolfenstein 3D engine.
On January 26 2011 06:30 Szgk wrote: Sacrifice (2000) One of the most original rts games I've ever seen, visually stunning for a ten year old game. Wide critical acclaim but didn't sell very well. I highly recommend you watch TotalBiscuit's review video:
An amazing space RTS : Outpost 2 ( it's not super well known and its from 1997 i think. There is still a huge community for 1v1s and stuff. There is even a community made outpost 3 in the works.
Thrill kill on the ps1. Not so much underrated as cancelled. It's the first game that used the multiplayer 3d arena fighting with 4 players. It was too violent at the time so they did not release it.
Thrill Kill is a cancelled 1998 fighting video game for the Sony PlayStation, which even today is still widely available despite being officially unpublished. Thrill Kill was considered a technical feat for the PlayStation for allowing four players to fight simultaneously in the same room, although this technical feat was overshadowed by the brutality and controversy surrounding the game. Set in an urban version of Hell, the characters were all damned souls fighting for another chance in the mortal world, watched over by Marukka, the Goddess of Secrets, who has organized the infernal tournament and promised the winner reincarnation on Earth. Other content included revealing BDSM and fetishistic costumes, characters with amputated limbs and other handicaps and violent and sexual moves with names such as "Bitch Slap", "Swallow This", and "Head Muncher".
I still play that game today with friends. It's such a good fighting game

Oh man i remember playing this at school in the computer lab.
I'm not sure if these games were popular during their time since I was just a kid when I played them but I definetely burned a zillion hours into them.
There were people that said this was just a platformer in first person perspective, and there were people who played the game. This game was one of the most fun unique games I have played in a LONG time. You did what can only be described as the most amazinig parkour imaginable, and the most smooth awesome fighting in any game I can think of, with ease. The controls were increadibly fluid and no matter what you did, it somehow looked awesome. The game was fun as hell too.
For some reason, no one seemed to like the game though, saying it was too short. But think about it, what are some other games that are increadibly fun and innovative that are kind of a first person shooter, but not really, that have a sequal coming out soon that I am rediculously hyped for because the first was too short? Need another hint, it's theme song has the same name as mirrors edge: still alive.
Game had big hype before it came out, and then fizzled out upon release with mediocre reviews. Honestly this is one of the most unique 1st person games I've ever played. The controls were great, the graphics were awesome, with the shiny white utopian city which looked more and more grimy the closer you looked. Sure the story in the cut scenes was poorly executed, but the story told in game through the setting etc was great.
Awesome game, hugely underrated.
Also beyond good and evil on the original Xbox.
Awesome story, great female lead who is feminine but not in an overly sexy/sleazy way. Great dungeon design, great characters, and great reviews.
But poor sales. A game that imo should be rated up with the zelda in terms of action/adventure games.
I have to giva a shoutout to some PS1 platformers:
Klonoa, so much fun, trademark 2,5D advanture . I feel like I have to grab its PS2 successor.
Spyro the Dragon, not that underrated actually, but still in the shadow of Crash 3(I had to choose between those two as a kid, tough one) released at the same time. Showing how developers should think about 3D platformers.
It's so good you can emulate PS1 on PSP, going back to the bright past :D.
Mirror's Edge was definitely a great unique concept, but the entire thing seems like it could be alot better. The mix of platforming / fighting / gunplay needs to be tweaked, and of course the length and story were abysmal.
Mirror's Edge 2 has amazing potential, I'm really looking forward to it.
I LOVED that game when I was younger, got it from a gaming magazine at some point, real fun. A futuristic RTS, no idea what the story was and never played it in multiplayer. You were able to research both Vehicles and Weapon systems and combine them afterwards... Really fun concept, you were able to come up with some pretty sick vehicles.
Not particularly sure if I'm right but I always felt Titan Quest got waaay less attention than it deserved. Despite the fact that I never got a character to the levelcap or finished all 3 difficulties I put sooooo many hours into the game. The class system that let's you combine 2 masteries into one class is pretty unique I think and additionally I'm a sucker for ancient mythology (although it's probably not 100% accurate it actually did help me in school from time to time :D).

LOL damn thanks for that, brought back so many memories. makes me wish I still had a genesis I could bust out.
Although NBA jam was awesome, I don't think it was underrated at all. IIRC it was quite popular, being on SNES and Genesis, and being used as a comparison game to say which console was better.
Anyway, it was awesome. I liked the fact that repeatedly shoving your opponent to the ground was legal, and that you could dunk anywhere inside the 3 point line.
On January 25 2011 22:37 Orome wrote: Vampires the Masquerade Bloodlines.
This.
It's the last of the mohicans of rpgs as far as I'm concerned :3.
Edit: Also this thread makes me feel old -__ and also Masters of magic. It's aweome.
I LOVED this game and played it to death, it had loads of charm, a great Sean Connery style narrator, diverse missions and it was extremely fun to play and build up an army of upgradeable heroes and manage your kingdom, however the unique concept was not perfected and leaves you very hungry for more content.
The sad part is that the sequel was not made by the original creators but some crappy drunk Russian company that puked out Majesty 2 (2009) which is one of THE worst most abysmal games I've ever played in my life. So basically just like Dungeon Keeper 2, the original creators will never pick up the series again and try to make a sequel that stays true to the original.
If you look at the release dates of all these games you'll tell what I grew up with, I have no regrets
Darkstone (1999) - Underrated, at the time critics said it was just another Diablo ripoff but in fact given the full 3D camera and gameplay improvements it was actually way better. With the exception of the atmosphere and storytelling that was virtually nonexistent compared to the game that started my childhood life as a gamer, Diablo!
Imperium Galactica II: Alliances (2000) - Extremely diverse, interesting and fun game to play, hugely underrated. I have yet to see storytelling like this told from the point of view of a leader of an intergalactic empire as he struggles to dominate the universe and ensure the survival of his species.
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven (1998) - An epic classic gem of old school RPG first-person dungeon crawling albeit pretty hard, it will remain lost to future gamers. Personally I love the little things that made this game so special and extremely fun to watch your 4 heroes grow to master their traits.
Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor (1999) - A slightly better MM6 with many improvements made, much more fun to play but imbalances breaks the game and it also overall wastes it's great potential, tends to stand in the shadow of it's predecessor.
Chaos Overlords (1996)- Great humor, great gangs and a greatly addictive board game! Anyone should Google after this game and download it from one of the Abandonware sites just to give it a try.
Age of Wonders (1999) - This is a beautiful gem with an even more beautiful music score, the unit descriptions and the lore in itself blows away most of the writing in todays games. The sequel AoW2 (2002) had the same beauty, amazing spells, great artistic graphics and different albeit still great gameplay but still lacks that special magic that made Age of Wonders feel like something out of The Lord of the Rings.
Theme Hospital (1997) - One of the most fun and the most unique game ever made from the creators of the Dungeon Keeper series. This is another timeless gem made by the allmighty Bullfrog Productions that meet their final end in 04 when EA combined their studios into EA UK...those fuckers. I adored this game when I was a kid, I always wanted to play it but never could until a year or two ago.
System Shock 2 (1999) - Among THE very best game I've ever played in my life, anyone who dares to call themselves a gamer needs to stop whatever they're doing right now and play this fucking awesome game.
Planescape: Torment (1999) - Widely regarded by it's fans as one of the best RPG ever made with the best storytelling ever conceived in a game. But this is not just a game, it's an interactive huge book, it's beyond traditional gaming development, it's a masterpiece that will blow your mind away with it's grim world, it's characters, it's depth and it's lore & philosophies. However The Nameless One tends to stand in the shadow of Black Isle's other Infinity engine series like Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Fallout by nostalgics. Is Torment underrated? Hell yeah, at it's release it was not a commercial success and little profit was made, many gamers have still never heard about it but this is not for the easily bored that need action and want to kill everything in sight. Torment is a game for the highly intellectual that have the patience to read through some of it's estimated over 800,000 or so words, is it worth it? Yes it's worth it...your mind will change forever.

I'm not sure if Demon's Souls should be underrated. It was pretty much game of the year. Sure, I'll hear flak about the game here and there, but I really don't know anyone in real life that doesn't love Demon's Souls.
Such an awesome game. I've tried to get a TL thread for it going, never really happened.
Such an awesome strategy game. Challenging single player campaign and still has an active community after all these years. Game's free too, so check it out.
I played an old Master of Orion style Star wars strategy game called Rebellion a lot. You got to use all the characters from the original series for various missions, you got to train Luke to be a Jedi and start training other jedi, you could build many death stars as the empire et cetera. I've never heard of anyone else playing it though, so I guess it qualifies .

A game I feel that was vastly underrated is Aliens vs. Predator from 2010. It got ok reviews and many fans were quite mixed on it. Much of the controversy seemed to stem from the wildly unbalanced multiplayer. Although multiplayer could have been a lot better, with some tournaments even having house rules on some tricks and exploits that were banned, or even on standard mechanics built into the game. What really drew me into the game was the incredibly atmospheric, scary, tension filled single player campaign. Playing as a Marine was the obvious highlight of the experience for me, feeling fear pump through my veins, a very nice sensation indeed. If you guys want a fun, and quite memorable single player FPS experience, I highly advise Aliens vs. Predator.
I think Time Splitters at the PS2 was absolutely amazing :D, dunno why it was never that populair, was so good , other than that I really loved Return to castle wolfenstein as well, amazing multyplayer honestly ;P
Thread made me Replay the Earth Series again thx for that.
Earth 2140-2150-2160 and the expansions should be forever remembered in the Archives of Awesomnes. Games had the best Cutscene Songs. Legendary RTS Series.
Mashed ! Really good game, anyone who played, even for the first time it will be laughing and laughing. Easy to pickup, and skill ceiling isn't very low either.
Mashed was noted in its reviews for being one of the best multiplayer games created, and in the UK it was given a 9/10 from OPSM2 and glowing reviews from other games magazines.
However, the merit was generally not seen in the US, with Ryan Davis of GameSpot rated Drive to Survive for PlayStation 2 2.3 (terrible) for bad camera, Stupid computer-controlled opponents, Simple, monotonous race designs, loose and unpredictable controls, not being sold in stores.[3] Mashed has a cult following and is still played worldwide
Sam & Max. Pretty much the whole point and click adventure genre in general. Well, it's a great series. Very witty, plots are quite interesting and I was surprised by most of the major plot twists.
And Alpha Protocol. To be fair, it was pretty far from the best design ever gameplay wise, but the negativity owed a lot to the preconception that it was basically another Mass Effect due to superficial reasons and Obsidians long track record of the industry bi*** that always gets handed spin offs and sequels. Good game, but no fun for gun builds.
I loved the Battlezone games and another game called Uprising. All are 'drive around in vehicles making bases, armies and blowing shit up-em ups'. I love that kind of gameplay. Having a hell of a time getting them to work in Windows 7 though
Populous: The beginning. Was the first god-type game I've ever played. There is still an active community for the game, which they release patches for and have a ladder system. Active chat channels and... the game is for free from the fan website. Honestly this game is awesome, RTS/God mode. Very simple to pick up, very complex to get good at, with a lot of potential strategies. http://popre.net/
Seven Kingdoms Ancient Adversaries: Awesome old school RTS which was a simplified version of Civilization (the game) basically turned in to an RTS. Focus on economy, trade, deciet, espionage or just military and science advances to conquer the world.
Dungeon Keeper series: And everything Bullfrog made. (PS they made populous in case none of you have heard of it!) This is like a Strategy with a hint of being god. I can't really descibre this game well... wikipedia it.

This game was seriously lots of fun. Pokemon TCG needs to be revived.
Pokemon tcg 2 was never released outside of Japan, but I played through it on Japanese translations because I loved the game so much! Here's the link to the second game. Some people have been hard at work translating it. clicky You have to go through the trouble of downloading the original japanese version somewhere and patching it. I'm pretty lazy.
Both games were released for the GBA, so even if your computer is shit you can run it at super speed on emulators like visualboyadvance: linky
You actually had to think and make new decks for every gym leader. It's always fun to make new decks and to constantly tweak your decks. If you don't like being challenged, this game isn't for you, go play the classical pokemon games.
Here's a video with some commentary to show you what it looks like
I thought about contributing some other games, but then I thought, would I really rather play this game than starcraft?
As far as flash games go, I also enjoyed many such as sonny, and epic battle fantasy 3. They're both rpgs. Sonny required some thinking. Epic Battle Fantasy was funny.
Definitely the coolest space combat flight sims I've found yet. The story, the missions and their objectives, the music and the voice-acting were all awesome and made it really immersive and believable.
Prototype before Prototype came out. This game is so much better than Prototype and besides the poor optimization of the game (a lot of hitches and choppiness), it's pretty awesome and the best spiderman game around! I don't know why it's overlooked so much when it's superb.
Best point and click adventure i have ever played, as well as the best voice acting and best story of any game IMO.
Great game, and just...superb voice acting. liked the Second one every bit as much. Probably even more. Again superb voice acting (you hardly know what you are missing in most games!), and a great story. readily available on steam I think too.
Granted the second one really sucked and was far too easy to get stuck not knowing what you missed, but the first one was great. It was the kind of generic tactics-style game, but I rather enjoyed it. It had some pokemon-esque collecting of Djinn that could be individually used or grouped up for "ultimate" attacks.

OriginalWar is hands down the BEST RTS/RPG hybrid I've ever played. The amount of personnel you have is limited in each mission, and you level them up in fields of your choice (engineering, science, worker, soldier and one more which I forgot). Once a character is dead, it stays dead. You need engineers to drive (and construct) vehicles, soldiers to do the fighting (you can choose their weapon load-out), workers build buildings and gather resource crates (which appear randomly across the map), etc. The main consequense of this is that decisions you made in the early missions will really start to matter in the later missions. The game is also pretty unforgiving. There's generally only effective way to win a mission, and it's not always the most obvious one.
Of my own choice I'd have to say:
Morrowind: graphics are dated, but the atmosphere, story and just overal game world cohesion are second to none. Never have I felt so unwelcome a guest as on Vvardenfel. Oblivion doesn't even compare (let's hope they do better with Skyrim, but I fear for it; graphics will probably be hugely underwhelming since they're coding for Xbox/PS3 again).
Prince of Persia 2008: Yes it's easy, and no you can't die, but I found the platforming immensely rewarding and fun (as opposed to frustrating), and you can't deny that it just looks gorgeous. I also liked the new prince and elika a lot more than the old one.
Red Alert 3: Only played the single player campaign, which was plain hilarious. Graphically superior to Starcraft 2, in my opinion. Great soundtrack too!
Command and Conquer 4. Yes, I liked that game. It was probably the only RTS that did 5v5 well. Complaints about the leveling system are kind of moot because you level up ridiculously fast. Really fun if you're more into casual RTS games.
Unreal Tournament 3: probably only flopped because of the really steep system requirements back in the day. It's basically UT '99 with a graphical update and new maps. Played it mainly on my Xbox360, and was able reliably win deathmatch games against Masterful bots (my thumb stick sensitivity was really insane).

I'm pretty sure your second sentence is really why it flopped, not your first. Although it's striking similarity to UT 2004, or nearly direct copy, is more apt, since it was so similar very few people switched to 3. UT3 online was essentially dead from the second it went online, unless things somehow changed since then.

Yeah, UT3 was a flop because it took the game in completely the wrong direction. It became all about vehicles and pretty graphics, despite like, EVERYBODY out there still enjoying the original after 4 years, were gladly playing it on the minimum graphics settings. The Unreal franchise was based on a very strong engine to begin with, and it was always one of Epic's defining qualities, but they really went completely overboard with it in UT3. There just wasn't anything new and exciting in there.
Plus, I dunno about anyone else, but the bright, spinny, Quake-Arena-esque powerups really ticked me off.
Back on-topic:
Another fun game from the 90s was Hexplore. Top-down, isometric viewpoint, with good-old voxel graphics, running around with a party of four characters solving puzzles, killing stuff, finding weapons, levelling up and all of that good RPG business. The story was hilariously bad, mind you. Something to do with God being an alien or something, I forget. The gameplay was great, though.
The only thing that sucked about that game is most people playing it were russians I believe and whenever I was on, there was like 20 people online and you couldn't get a game going most of the time, not to mention my 250-300+ ms.

Ooooh, I played this game a whole bunch, it was really cool and really long (and kinda hard also). I really liked it.
In the same genre (kinda), I really liked Tales Of Symphonia on the GameCube, clearly one of the best of the genre.
Anyone remember starlancer? I probably played through the campaign about 15 times just because the game was so epic. I wished for a sequel but they made freelancer instead. *sobs*
The Last Remnant Star Control 2 Planescape: Torment (ok, that one is spoken of positively but no one's played it) Breath of Death 7: The Beginning (great 1$ indie game) Dark Sector (not the greatest, but easily worth the 5$... Same controls as Gears of War but with a badass frisbee of death too) Gothic 1 Gladius Spy vs Spy

That's the one. You can find mods these days that bring the game's resolution up to something a little less tragic. Amazing game, with the best story ever written. Shame how such an incredible game's low popularity can be summarized in the form of: 'the box art was ugly and nobody wants to play a guy that looks like a zombie'.
Every review or comment I've ever heard about this game is that it's fucking terrible. But man, had so much fun playing it as a kid, reviews be damned.

Probably my #2 favorite RPG after the Mass Effect series. Takes JRPG themes, a unique battle system, and dialog that very rarely turns into the usual J-Cheese you see in other games (FFXIII). Was overshadowed by the FFXIII hype machine and had nearly no marketing.
Monster Hunter Freedom (2, U, 3 [praying])
Yes I know, Monster Hunter is to Japan what Justin Bieber is to tween girls, sex in a jewel case. Still, it's presence in US is somewhere between sleeper and cult hit. I love it how it's so simple (kill shit, make better weapons, kill more shit) and yet so deep at the same time. Hopefully the series gains some traction in the US, and an appearance on the NGP would be lovely *wink*.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 both great games. Great story, gameplay and character development. Awesome game for anyone who like games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age.
Edit: I dunno if all of these posts qualify as "underrated"
AND I forgot Little Fighter. If you haven't played this, please check it out. It's easily one of the best fighting games out there and I THINK it's free.
Little Fighters 2 is so awesome, but I am so bad at it.
I enjoyed Earth 2150-Lost Souls. I can only think of one other game that gave me so much customizability in unit creation and that's Galactic Civilizations II. Speaking of which, is GalCivII considered underrated? Because I found that one fun as well.
I spent soo many hours pvping with my brother in this game.... ok ok ok... you go back to your base, and buy a tons of tanks and meet at middle.. k?
WOW, I can't believe anyone else has played this game. It had humorous cut-scenes and didn't take itself to seriously, I thought it was great fun even thou I could only play alone and I'd stomp others PvP every time with those green super-grenades that you first fired and could then trigger by pressing O
That was a decade ago but I remember everything in my life including how much I played it xD I thought it was an extremely unique game and loved the morphing Walker.
Some people have said certain games I kinda disagree with:
Amnesia the dark descent - new game, possibly hasn't hit it's full popularity. While a but underpopular, I think it'd made it's name quite well-known at least among PC gamers (certainly it could use more though I guess) Masters of Orion - I don't think this was ever underrated? It's just old Demon Souls - Not a underrated game? I've heard of it quite a bit. Maybe it's like amnesia:TDD - a popular and good game, but should maybe be a bit more popular. Torchlight - I don't think this game deserves to be any more popular than it is. It's not that good, and it's certainly not unique. AFAIK there's no multiplayer still. When multiplayer mod/patch/game comes out, then it will deserve more attention.
Outpost 2 - Got this game as a birthday present once I think (or possibly bought it). Pretty bad game. It got bad reviews and it deserved them. I played through the game and was OK with it, but I don't see how you could think it was good, probably just nostalgia. Darkstone - bought it expecting at least a decent game, I was really into "RPG"s like Diablo clones and this. Didn't like it. In fact it was so bad (and maybe had some bugs too?), I didn't even really give it much of a chance. I played several levels and then stopped playing. I can't say for sure this game doesn't belong on here, but am fairly confident.
Dark Reign 2 - Naw. I got that game in a pack of games. + Show Spoiler +
DR2 Wasn't good - dark reign 1 was even better than it, and dark reign 1 wasn't too bad - I was overly hyped for it though and expected too much, but still had good fun with it. Battlezone 2 that i got from the pack was better.
My picks (or agreements) for great underrated games: Armored core 1 - totally agree with. Master of Arena is the best one though and is probably even more obscure. I wish a remake of this was made (ESPECIALLY FOR PC) with more balanced parts and maybe a few new features. The later armored cores changed the game a bit too much for me... made it rather stupid. Rise of the Triad - Totally agree with this. Fantastic music for it's time, and the music is still very catchy IMO. Sounds are great and unforgettable (sorta like Starcraft or Wolfenstein 3D). Gameplay is great for it's time too - It's just unfortunate this game was made the time it was, and used the engine it did, because the z-axis support was pretty limp.
Outcast - FANTASTIC, AMAZING single player action adventure game. Some of the best graphics for it's time, and one of the best atmospheres in gaming history I'd say.
Nox - Tied with Guild Wars for best fantasy PvP game, or even best 1-unit non-FPS PvP game in general. Some minor balance problems and bugs, but still has fantastic gameplay. Some people like the single player for this game, but I didn't find it good.
I'll also agree with 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors 9, tribes 2, ad Planescape: Torment even though I have not played these games, lol. I even owned (and think I still do) planescape torment, just never go around to playing it (which one can probably understand if you're reading this post), and hated it's terribly low resolution (which can apparently be modded now).

Did you beat this game? I couldn't get past the part where you have to get past that forcefield with the planet pieces mechanism. I guess I could look it up online how to finish it. I still have access to the 486 I used to play this game on, but while I know it was quite buggy before, it might not work at all anymore (could still use dosbox though).

Yeah - It could have been better, but was still a very fun game. Multiplayer would have made it better probably. I got this game free with my first video card (ELSA ERAZOR II), and really loved the graphics and was amazed how fast the game ran. Alekh47 (or someone else), I was thinking of buying 9,9,9 for my mom who bought a DS (with a brain game that actually was kinda sucky)... thing is I don't think she's played like any video games in her life, is quite old, and didn't seem too interested in the DS (even though she bought one for herself). Do you think the game is simple enough for her to play? I watched youtube videos and it seems like there was quite a bit of controls involved. I sorta discounted/discredited the idea, because I think she's either not much of a gamer or too old to be.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic received strong praise, along with high critical acclaim. KotOR won numerous awards, including Game Developers Choice Awards' 2004 game of the year,[30] BAFTA Games Awards' best Xbox game of the year, and Interactive Achievement Awards for best console RPG and best computer RPG.[31]
KotOR has seen success as the game of the year from many sources including IGN, Computer Gaming World, PC Gamer, GMR Magazine, The Game Developers Choice Awards, Xbox Magazine, and G4.[31] According to the review aggregator Metacritic the PC version received an average score of 93 based on 33 reviews.[32] Interactive Achievement Awards awarded it for Best Story and Best Character Development.[31] IGN gave KotOR additional awards in Best Sound (Xbox category), Best Story (PC category), Xbox RPG Game of the Year 2003, PC RPG Game of the Year 2003, Xbox Game of the Year 2003, PC Game of the Year 2003, and Overall Game of the Year 2003 across all platforms. In 2007, IGN listed it at #27 on its list of the Top 100 Games of All-Time.[33]

I don't think anybody can consider either Galactic Civ or Sins of a solar empire as underrated. They're not the most played games around but they're consistently being rated pretty high. And rightfully so.
Rise of Legends - extremely awsome RTS with very unique mechanics and great units. A shame nobody actually played it. The lacking success of this game nearly destroyed the developer big huges games.
Though i did like dreamfall, i was disappointed that there was hardly any puzzles, and the ones that were there, were very easy. I got the impression that they wanted to through a few item puzzels in there, but ran out of time. Who knows for sure, but hopfully when they release the dreamfall episodes there will be more puzzels similar to TLJ.

Dear God, Sevastapol, Seelow Heights, and the last Afrika Corps mission were ridiculous. I still remember how my snipers had to take the 150mm artillery pieces, fire a shot to try and kill one of those dug in tigers, and then run away before getting blowed up by counter battery fire. Or having to take out that pier full of Rocket Launchers with 5 Kommandos.
Quite possibly the best WWII RTS I've ever palyed though the voice acting is hilariously bad.
Oh yeah, don't even get me started about the penal brigade BS where you charged through the minefield and into machine guns and trenches and tanks and they didn't even give you any ammunition.
The Dynasty Warriors series overall is something I find extremely fun for some reason. Yes i realize its repetitive and the majority of gamers hate it and think its bad but for some reason I love it. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm chinese but idk. Something about just slashing people to bits just seem extremely fun to me for some reason.
Another game that actually got good reviews but I don't think a whole lot of people played it was Jet Set Radio Future for the original xbox. You basically move around on roller skates and fight enemies using spray cans but it was extremely fun. I like the story to the game and it was pretty good for free roaming to go along with a pretty unique art style for the game.
I found Too Human to be really fun even though pretty much everyone I ever talked to about it couldn't get over the controller setup, which was annoying at times but i still had enough fun with it to get through a couple of playthroughs. I think its a shame that it didn't get received well and they decided to scrap the sequels (it was supposed to be a trilogy).
kirby airride: for the N64. Best partygame ever man, never a dull moment.
IL2 sturmovik: i guess it was not underappreciated in the flight sim community but this had sick potential to have a very competitive scene. nothing is funner then flying with a group of potent tacticains and a good sense of teamwork.
toejam and earl series for the sega genisis such a sick platformer with silly humor sprikled throughout
Looking at this thread brings back a lot of memories. Most of the games I was going to mention have already been mentioned (most important one being Transport Tycoon. That game was leagues of awesome.) but there is one that has failed to have been mentioned!
I don't think many people have played it, but Trade Empires.
Such an awesome strategy game. Challenging single player campaign and still has an active community after all these years. Game's free too, so check it out.
Outcast - FANTASTIC, AMAZING single player action adventure game. Some of the best graphics for it's time, and one of the best atmospheres in gaming history I'd say.
Thanks for this reminder. I grabbed it off GoG for $6 and I remember how cool it was. The fully orchestral music is awesome. I've always had a thing for voxel graphics, too. In games like Delta Force, Hexplore and Outcast. Dunno why. They're just visually appealing.
Just like Planescape: Torment though, I can't forget 'the big twist' at the end and re-experience it all over again. About 5 minutes in I already remembered the full story, and I haven't played the thing for 10 years!
fucking awesome, kept u in suspense, played with your emotions, and scared the shit out of you. BUY THIS GAME NOOOOOOOOW RAWR!
Definitely not an underrated game... A lot of hate on DA:O as well, I liked it.
because it's popular or because it's not good?
Also, I disliked DA:O too. Felt like 90% of their time/money was put into graphics and voice overs.
Felt similarly. It has some great graphics, voice acting and story, no doubt, but the gameplay was sorely, sorely lacking. I played 60-something hours in my first playthrough, waiting the whole time for it to feel like Baldur's Gate again, but it never did.
Here's hoping they devoted more time to fleshing out the gameplay in the 2nd one. A demo should be out in a couple of weeks, so I'll find out if I should cancel the preorder or not.
HOLY FUCK that game was so good, and literally noone else played it.
That fps had everything, vampire mode, disease mode, assualt, deathmatch, teamdeathmatch, free for all, hillarious characters, interesting / fun guns and a kickass challenging campaign.

Hmm, i thought DA:O had some of the worst graphics I've seen in a game in years, at least for a high budget game.
I agree with the voice overs though. SOOO much talking even though the story was unbelievably bad and uninteresting. Although oddly enough even with all that voice acting my OWN character was a deaf mute apparently... Such a bad game.
apart from prevoisly named games like Transport Tycoon and Tribes(1) def. Tribes 2 it was... and is still mabey the best freaking fps-shooter out there. (imo)
Oh yea, I played it a lot and it's the only game I ever played within a clan (but only for short period). Very sad that they had shut down all the multiplayer systems and not allow to run a community based mp.

Seconding Persona 3! Not really underrated at all, but still somewhat unknown among my friends. I played this through with a friend of mine. So. Much. Fun!
Megamen Legends, best megamen game in the franchise imo, the 3D dungeon exploration and equipment/item customization was heck alot of fun! no idea why this game didn't sell much more than it did though... such an awesome game.
Agreed on this one and many others in the thread. Seriously one of the funnest games I've ever played. Nice post!
It was pretty underrated when released first. Wikipedia states it was successful when released on CD, but I dont really know about that. A great game, with a great story (based upon a great book series). The sequel (Return to Krondor) isn't that great though :/
All three parts of Realms of Arcania. They were really successful in Germany (they're based upon a German P&P RPG) but I never really heard about their success in the international market.
Dont really know any other underrated games. Maybe played a shitton in my youth (Utopia, King's Bounty (the original)) but since we didnt have internet back then no idea if they were popular (I assume stuff like Might & Magic 3-5 were popular)
Its called Ice and Fire. Basically you run around on this space station looks for stuff inside blocks of ice. You thaw the blocks of ice with a fire gun and can refreeze stuff with your ice gun. It is either a freaky monster, which you have to keep frozen, or a frozen human who once unfrozen will reactivate some part of the space station allowing you access to other floors. There was also this weird spaceship flying section where you could get from space station to space station but was kind of difficult since you had no idea where you were going.

Battle Realms; though the expansion wasnt as good as the vanilla game imo. A strategy game with really unique features. Star_Fox_64. Maybe not underrated, but just very old. If you have never done a barrel roll get an emulator and this game asap. Armies of Exigo. Gameplay of SC with WC3-like story, fun to play nevertheless.

Eeeeh when do you need to grind in borderlands? Ive played it maybe 10+ times, and ive never had to "grind" (just killing mobs/not questing) on any character...
Ontopic: Fury 3! fist game i played with joystick i think, really fun as i remember it. Was way over 10 years ago tho.

That's right, Secret of Mana 2, never to be released in the US it is maybe the most unheralded SNES game. This is one sequel that did not disappoint those who played improving upon everything that made secret of mana great while being innovative in the action-RPG genre.
At the beginning of the game you can choose three of the six playable characters. What is really innovative is that your story CHANGES depending on who your lead character is, and even more story is open depending on who your second character is, giving you tons of replayability just for the story.
Gameplay also has seen massive improvements over SoM. New to SD3 is the class system. This diagram illustrates nicely:
Overall anyone who loves older action-RPGs should give this game a try. It was never released in the US (I'm not sure about EU ...) so you will have to find a rom of it. There is however an English translation.
i dunno if at its time it was underrated but i have to mention this series due to the fact that 90% of the ppl i talk to have never played it and never even heard of it this series is "Legacy of Kain" definitely makes my top 3 series list, if you ever have the time play it i highly recommend it
I dunno if it counts as underrated, but i've barely ever seen it mentioned anywhere
(As well as the expansion)
Best game in the civilization genre imo (that i know of), to the point where if i even try to play something like the civ series itself, i just ask myself why i'm not playing alpha centauri
The game I find fun is Universe at War: Earth Assault.
The game has very very distinct races and in general is an awesome game, but no one plays it. Part of it is the steep requirements when it was initially released and you had to play for ranked ladder, but now they fixed that it should be awesome to play!
I'd like to play online sometime if anyone's interested.
Definitely a game called Warzone, released in 1999 by Microsoft. It features huge amounts of different tech for your units, and to make it even better, you can then combine tracks, body types and weapons for your tanks. You can also make use of smaller ground units and airplanes with the same options.

It's not underrated, just unknown. It's really high rated in the circles where it's known. I replay the game every year or so, just because of the infinite possibilites. Such a shame games take forever and I really suck, so I think I've never finished an actual map

I actually just recently played the first Kain game for the first time. Very enjoyable game, and I have to say the voice acting was remarkably good for a game as old as that. I tried out the Soul Reaver series but couldn't really get into it, mainly because of the awful camera.

Have to post about Savage 2: A Tortured Soul. I love that game. It's not very well known, which is a shame. Free to download/play, too - if you can deal with a few insignificant limitations. Multiplayer team-based game. Each team has a commander which controls the game like an RTS (base-building, buffing) the rest of the players take up the role of different units, controlling from a third-person camera. Objective is to destroy the enemy base. Combat is mostly melee-based.
Sure, the game has some faults - some occasional bugs, but the gameplay is really original and fun.

Tactical Ops - Started out a UT99 mode, went retail and it's still somewhat active. small community left that has pretty frequent pick up games. (gamesurge @ #TOPUG)

I completely forgot about this game, it was ridiculously fun and the music was incredibly good.

I am not sure what Dragon Age: Origins is doing in this thread. That game is way overrated in my opinion. It received 91% from Metacritic. I finished like 70% of the game and stopped right there. Even with major modding, it still felt like a pretty bad game. I don't think any Baldur's Gate fans enjoyed it.
Reviews from major game sites suck these days. Some of the ratings I never understand, like Fallout and DA:O receiving over 90% ratings and New Vegas receiving lower ratings than Fallout 3.
Its basically one of the few games that's done FP-RTS well. Basically think CnC Renegade except better.
The funniest part looking back on it was that your character could go into a Comm. Bunker to use a station that allowed you to get a top down view of the battlefield... So in essence you played a FPS where your character can sit down in a chair with a mouse and monitor to play an RTS.
Medal of Honor Rising Sun was my most favorite game ever, even to this day. I'm considering buying a PS2 just to play this game again, it was so much fun. I remember during the summer bringing over one of my friends and then having me, my brother and him play against the bots on that game. I loved playing the level with the two destroyer ships parked together, and had gangplanks so you can go to the other teams ship. Also, the Baseball field one with a bunch of crates on it was amazingly fun too. That was such an awesome game!
You are not alone, i played that game to death as a kid. Finding all the shortcuts, trying to land on other bikers. Damn that was a fun game. Too bad i got rid of it for some reason.
Seriously, I loved that game to absolute death. It wasn't very long, but I never got past the Nuts and Bolts section without cheating. Very fun for an oldschool top down RTS. Too bad it's been ridiculously obscure for years. I got it as a present from my grandmother one christmas ages ago. I have no idea where she got it, and I've never seen it in a store since, but I loved this game for so long. I even ordered a copy off of Ebay once for 1.50 (plus $11 shipping :<)
This story was a lot of fun. The lines between what was real and what wasn't really start to blur, especially when you get the ability to change the world by spreading rumors. Awesome concept for a game.

I played it when I was a kid and loved it. It's the closest thing to "destructible" environment that you can get at the time. Also, nothing's better than planting a sticky remote bomb on an enemy, only for them to run around in circles screaming.
Anyone play this game? Best game ever IMO when I was a kid... then I lost the CD....

This game made me realise I had not become to old for games, games had just turned more shit.
Great overall game, great atmosphere. Epic fucking music. Great level/character design. Chesire Cat quotes are some of the best ever.
Before Black and White, the best God game ever. You had to cheat and get infinate magic, then enable all spells simualtanously. It was epic, you really felt like a deity reigning down armageddon. Fire rain, earthquakes, tornados, volcanos, landfalls, tsunamies with people flying and dying everywere, buildings burning and exploding. Epic.

Yeah, like many people I stumbled onto this one on Steam and I was blown away. Just calling it a combat game is a disservice, it's a kingdom sim with so many great elements, army building, trading.. all sorts of options I would have hoped Sid would have incorporated into his latest Pirates! game, fantastic.
For old games that were underrated and not just old (Privateer? Star Control 2? Descent? Master of Orion?! Master of Magic, yeah, most people seemed to assume it was a knockoff and it's probably the greatest 4x game ever so I'd agree that's underrated.. KOTOR?!?) I always call on Sid Meier's Covert Action; widely regarded as a debacle, I've always loved it (and it's the last computer game my little brother was willing to play with me TT).
A few of my favorites have been mentioned, so I'll mention one that I didn't see yet: One Must Fall 2097
Probably the best fighting game to make it to the PC. Solid hit detection, fairly hard to get someone stuck in an instant-death-loop by juggling in the corner. (Actually, you could occasionally do more damage, in return, if someone tried to do that to you)
No online multiplayer, but in person, it's a blast. Has solid RPG elements (i.e. upgrades), single player actually has a storyline for each of the characters. Character attributes means something & change the style of play. Solid progression in multiple tournaments. Each of the mechs you can choose do something different/better than the others. (And I hate the freaking Shadow to this day; I was a master at the Jaguar, though; ah, the joys of leaping into my brother and taking him down, I loved the counters)
All in all, a great little game. Not sure how well it'll run now with DosBox, but if you want a solid single-player fighting game, this really has an incredible amount of depth to it.
According to the developer, "Drug Lord 2 is a game that continues where Drug Lord 1 left off. Your goal is still to amass as much money as possible by buying and selling drugs, but your neighborhood has grown considerably." Drug Lord 2 introduces an array of fun new features, namely the ability to travel between cities whose markets may be different, the borrowing of money from loan sharks, and charts displaying a history of price for each market.
The concept of the game is simple; you start off as a wannabe-drug dealer and must work your way up the ranks by making wise economic (and strategic) decisions. You make money by buying "goods" when they are at low prices, and selling the "goods" when they are high. This is supply and demand at its best. It's like they made microeconomics fun and addictive, which is no easy feat.
This game is much more entertaining than a stock market simulator because it adds gameplay elements to something that's so cut-and-dried. And unlike many game remakes and continuations, Drug Lord 2 is actually an improvement over its predecessor.
played this when i was in high school. really "addicting". :D :D
Dark messiah of might and magic. Pretty much the most revolutionary and fun first person game i ever played and it's sorta underrated. It did most things that oblivion did, just much better.
DCS: Black Shark:- There are two kind of people in the world. One who play games like Apache; Air assault and think they are playing a flight sim. They press a button and helicopter starts flying. No startup etc required. They press another button and targets get locked and missile are fired. The second type of people are who play DCS: Black shark and spent 2 days learning how to start the helicopter and weeks learning how to properly maneuver it. Requires even more skill than Starcraft 2. DCS:Black shark on metacriticVideo of DCS startup
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 for ps2 was a fantastic game; class based 3rd person shooter. There were 4 factions: CIS, Republic, Rebels and the Empire. Each faction had two unique classes in addition to 6(?) generic classes (not to mention the main characters from the series) and the game had a bunch of other content. Players could also achieve weapon unlocks and stat bonuses for kills and base capturing.
A lot of people railed on the glitchy level designs and that the gfx weren't top notch, but those were minor compared to the vs modes and overall gameplay.

Really good game. The AI was kinda mediocre, and the open world a bit too "empty". However sniping in this game was so cool, great depth of field etc...
Ogre Battle 64. I can't get pictures at the moment, but it's a strategy game that has a pretty good story and quite a bit of depth as far as strategy is concerned, although that aspect is rarely seen because of how easy the game can be.
If you haven't played it, and are a fan of RPG's or strategy games, I'd recommend you go and check it out.

I don't think this game qualifies as underrated, but definitely underplayed. I just don't think it can ever find mainstream success or be super popular, just because not everyone can enjoy such a complicated and difficult game. I personally loved it but all my friends that I showed the game to weren't impressed.
I've been playing a new character since the announcement of Dark Souls got me hyped to pick the game back up. Working on a pure mage (she's only SL 45 or so). I might also try a faith build of some sort later on. Almost all of my previous characters have been melee.
the longest journey the game itself got good reviews, but it's an adventure/puzzle game and some people think those games suck. i was surprised at how entertaining i found it.
Not only is much of the art style similar; the cinematic cut scenes, the look & feel of units - it also laid the groundwork for many of the now-classic gameplay mechanics; the most prominent being the siege mechanic where a unit sacrifices mobility for power and range.
Think of the "Gray" as Xel'Naga - an ancient race that uses bionic life forms as weapons.

How was Dark Colony the precursor to StarCraft? WarCraft (2) laid the groundwork for most of SC's interface, and Command&Conquer had cinematic cut scenes a long time before. It may or may not have been the first game to introduce specific details like siege mode, but that's about it.
All I remember about the game was that it paled compared to Dark Reign and Total Annihilation, which were released around the same time, that base building was very simple, there was only one ressource and that the units from both sides were basically the same, just with different skins.
I did enjoy it nonetheless, the day/night thing was cool and artifacts made for fun situations. But it doesn't deserve the title "StarCraft's precursor" as it lacked most of what made SC1 so awesome at the time - mechanics, diversity, balance, complexity and replay value.
This is an amazing little storyline-based RPG for the Nintendo DS. You literally spend about 25% of your game time in conversations which are actually worth checking out, it's pretty incredible. Also has a nice semi-cheesy but still pretty unpredictable storyline with multiple endings.
This game is our classic LAN shooter. It's really so much fun to not know where the heck you got shot from this time, but you hear the guy next to you chuckling because you ran into his trap AGAIN.
Most amazing style of RTS ever, it also effectively lived and died with Tribes 2 to be almost wholly replaced by Halo style RTSes that can't even compare. So many untapped ideas, especially the Rabbit game type. The trade-off of momentum for unpredictable movement combined with skill shot weapons and was awesome.
Ok so tons of people hated this and had every reason to. It's still MASSIVELY underrated and the movement and gameplay was top notch. There's so many ways this type of genre could go, especially if the developers aren't afraid of their game like DICE. The big issue with ME is that the devs weren't confident enough that the parkour would be engrossing enough for people so they forced a lot of combat into the game. Outside of the cut scenes and lame stories this was one of the most immersive feeling games I've played in a long time. No other first person game has come even remotely close to giving me the spacial awareness that ME did. The gaming world is going to be seriously missing out by the delayed/canceled/? sequel and lack of games following in its footsteps. I really wish ME had mod support because modders could have do so many amazing things with the game. I would have loved to see a RE survival horror style game done with the movement and a similar weapon system of ME.
It's basically a game engine that was originally designed to replicate the gameplay of Total Annihilation, but now it has grown into a full-fledged RTS engine (though it's still mostly used to play Total Annihilation-like games). I always enjoy coming back to this game whenever I need a Starcraft 2 break.
Neverwinter Nights! played it for 7 years online, i still play it online a few hours a week. The deepest character building of any game i've ever seen. The pvp was fantastic back when the online servers were more populated but still even today its a fun game to play with my old friends.
For anyone that loves to build characters of different kinds in a rpg game you should check it out still. its like 10 years old now, but nothing compares to the level of detail in making a character in this game. Hard thing is finding a well run server now a days. Servers are completely player made with the toolset, run and updated by players. Its a very unique game compared to mmo's
Really doesn't need any introduction, but I still meet people that haven't played it. To be honest, it's one of the most fun games that I've ever played. Pretty sure you can even get it on emulator now, so go out and play it!
Awesome turn based strategy game that takes place in medieval Europe .
this game was retardedly awesome! I remember how ridiculous the battles were with streams of arrows, crazy path finding, and the badass castle sieges. Oh and for some reason I always thought it was hilarious when there were waaay too many Cows on farm squares.
This game is load of fun, too bad it wasn't popular at all
This game was the shit!
Alongside Total Annihilation. Man games were sooo much better when I was a kid!
Kabuto was hilarious as hell. Its too bad you could never find proper MP matches (u just get ppl playing snipers and 1 shotting kabuto when u spawn...)
Giants Citizen Kabuto was sooooooooo good. Too bad it was plagued with technical problems. Up until my present computer I couldn't run it smooth because compatibility problems with ATI and game freezing.

At any rate here's a some game that I don't think anyone in the thread has mentioned
It's a D platformer made by Gamefreak (the guys who make pokemon). It's a really fun and fairly creative platformer. The only place I've ever seen talk about it is Nintendo Power.

People who think that Oblivion sucks are a minority. They have been gaming in the 90's and have a lot of knowledge about Crpg and video games in general and when they say that Oblivion is mediocre they can back up their claim. They have played the older Elder Scrolls games, the BG / Fallout / Ultima /etc... series. How can they underrate a game when they are the only people who can make a comparison with the previous references of the genre ?
On the other hand you have a majority of people who have started to play during the 00's on console and who think that Oblivion was the best Crpg of all time. Tell me how a game is underrated when the majority of people think that this was the best game of the year ? Should i also mention that Oblivion won many awards including several GOTY ? Look the ratings for that game it is always a 90+ %, 5 stars or 9/10 on every mainstream site.
You guys seem to not really get it. They are not underrating Oblivion, YOU ( the majority ) are overrating this game and that's because you lack of knowledge about Crpg. That's like saying that CoD is underated because experienced FPS players will tell you it is shit lol. It is not underrated it is OVERRATED by the majority of people who think it is the best game of the year. Still funny how you are trying to reverse the value judgement lol.
TL:DR: leave ranking to the experts because they are qualified.
Starwars Galaxies Post NGE, most people hated the NGE beyond belief myself included, but the game did get better overtime and began to produce one of the best PVP experiences ever, with extremely complex PVP tactics and a very dynamic combat.
The first KKND was so hard in single player, but so satisfying when you win a mission. I miss unforgiving rushing AIs like that. Also The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall was amazing(ly buggy) for its time, it had nudity too! Too bad Bethsada are now wussies that care more about the ESRB rating.
Valkyrie Profile 2, Star Ocean: Till the End of time: Probably the 2 best PS2 games I've ever played. So brilliantly crafted.
Drakengard 1-2: Although almost unheard of but I found the games very enjoyable. 3rd person perspective warrior, swinging large swords doing sick combo, mounting on dragons kickin ass without lag.

I personally don't think particularly highly of Oblivion (I don't think it is shit either, just not very good and every game you listed in your post was better by alot), I don't know where you got the impression that I did. I was merely defending the other poster because by the rules of the thread, he thinks that at least some people underrate it. Personally I think the gaming press and many console gamers certainly overrated it, but I also think that if he likes the game and thinks its haters are wrong then it was a fair post in this thread (though I do agree that it is a strange pick to put a game with over 90% on metacritic as being underrated but whatever).
Also the places that I frequent typically are full of people who say Oblivion was shit, so perhaps I thought that sentiment was more widespread than I thought. But I'm gonna stop talking about it after this post so it doesn't shit up this thread, which is supposed to be about games people like without needing to defend them.
Another game that I don't think gets enough love is
It got good reviews when it came out but nobody seems to think anything of it anymore. It was pretty similar to Mario 64, but it adds enough stuff to the formula to be great (imo of course). Also I feel it was superior to Banjo-Kazooie in every possible way
I grew up on mortal kombat 1-2, and really never got into any of them from 3 and on wards though I dabbled in them. Then this year I played Shaolin Monks and it was amazing as it made so many old school references to the first two games. Back in the day when rumors were the way to open secret characters as the internet wasn't big. It was just an amazingly enjoyable nostalgic experience even though the game was definitely mediocre from an objective POV
This game made me slam my head into the door whenever I died.

for me, its all about Star Trek Armada. Probably one of the 1st RTS's i played for an extended period of time.
Game was actually sick, i mean, if the shields were down on an enemy ship, you could transport some of your crew from your ship to fight the rest of their crew off, and then commandeer that vessle! kick ass! my favorite moment was just building Starbases everywhere on the map instead of making turrets, and was just fun to play as borg, and romulan, klingon, etc. Man, good times! + Show Spoiler +
I was doing some testing with a friend for Rusty Hearts, which is still in Open Beta. Player base is relatively small (only real advertising that worked for them was steam), it got great reviews yet it still is trying to find it's way.
FPS for PC and PS360. It's like a better FEAR (gameplay, not a scary game). Slow down time? Of course! Freeze time? Check! Rewind Time? Hell yeah!
If you like Time Manipulation in FPS, then this is one of the best. There's a demo for 360 and I think for PC as well. Check it out.
This game had the terrible misfortune of coming out the month in between Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. =\ It was overlooked but is a very fun experience and the game is uber cheap right now, so worth picking up for sure!

Just saying.
Definitely agree.
Anyway
This game was an isometric RPG, incredible for it's time. The world was huge and everything could be explored, considering the quality of other famous RPG's at the time this was definitely an under-rated game.
There is a lets play on youtube that clocks in at roughly 500 hours (just guessing but it has over 50 videos at roughly 10 minutes each) which was just immense scale back in that day!
The best thing about the game is that it was completely open ended. You could kill any NPC (regardless if you find out later that it was actually an important Quest NPC and you couldn't continue your journey) or check any bookshelf/chest for hidden items... And there was absolutely no false limitation, no blocked off areas, nothing could stop you from going anywhere except the amount of food you had and your level.
