In just about every other social setting, people are generally expected to exercise some amount of decorum to each other. Call it mutual respect maybe. Yet on the Internet people shamelessly proclaim how rude they are and doggedly insist on their right (not just a matter of right, that is is actually desirable) to continue to be as rude as they want, regardless of how other people might feel.

Yes, we have one medium where people can actually express themselves openly without being dogged by mindless masses obsessed with political correctness, and you want to take that forum away? Restraint and decorum have their place. It is not the internet. Never never never, please.

See again with the extremes. Having basic respet in a conversation isn't an obsession with political correctness. It's basic respect! And it really is starting to sound like you want the internet to specifically be a place where people go to be assholes. But like... why do we need to be assholes in the first place? I am sure you don't wake up thinking man I need to insult 40 people today, but I can't in real life, thank god the internet is there to fulfill my daily asshole quota.

There is a diffrence between being insulted in person, most likely by a co-worker or person you actually know/care about, because seriously.. Customers can't do that shit to you, trus me, and being insulted by some random voice you'll never see again in some online game which is most likely about killing each other.

Pretty much all of human society will disagree with you. You can be polite and still be an expressive individual. Most people manage this. And again it's about being polite, not platitudes and fake niceties. I am sure you can understand the difference - you can be firm, and direct, while stilll being polite.

The disgruntled reaction to redefining (clarifying) sexism is ridiculous. I can't believe how silly this thread has been.

But what people are talking about isn't being called names in a video games. This is harassment. Finding peoples phone numbers and facebook accounts. Spamming their twitter account with pornographic images. Calling their parent's house because they found the number. Women not signing up for public, live tournaments because they are harassed in person. I had a friend who is a MtG judge get harassed by a bunch of ass clowns at Pax East because she was the only women judge working that day and they didn't like being told where to sit by a girl(in an tournament with assigned seating).
This stuff has zero to do with things like 4chan and people take it seriously because it is. And acting liek its the exact same as getting called names in a CSGO match is just idiotic.

I love the sophistry in that Sarkeesian tweet on sexism. Basically, "define" an ambiguous word by saying it consists of two more ambiguous words added together. For fun we can construct more indisputable truths that way:
No dog can be beautiful. Beauty equals desirability plus attractiveness. Cats are more desirable than dogs.
No American can be discriminated against. Discrimination equals prejudice plus power. The USA is a powerful country.
I don't know if it's deliberate dishonesty or just genuine ineptitude, but this is the main reason why these discussions devolve. One must clarify their terms at the outset. The more loaded the term is (say sexism or prejudice), the more precisely it should be broken down into simpler terms or analogies. Instead, the opposite seems to happen, and endless digression or insults ensue.

It's funny because I was thinking the same stuff about your comment. It shows a complete lack of understanding about what is even being suggested in the tweet. I can't blame you for not understanding the tweet in isolation but I can blame you for not reading up on what it meant.
