E3-1230v3 is LGA1150.

Its basically I7 without the integrated graphics (which I dont really need) and it is within my price range. + Show Spoiler + Case: Antec P182 Operating System: Windows 7 Professional Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3L CPU: Intel Q6600 (stock) Power Supply: Ultra X4 - 1050W (it was free) RAM: Patriot PC2-6400 4GB Graphics Card: EVGA nVidia 8800GT Superclock (670) 512MB Soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Hard Drive: Western Digital 150GB Raptor / Seagate Barracuda 3TB / Samsung HD103UJ 1TB / Western Digital 1TB external (backup) Monitor: 22" Samsung 2233RZ 2nd Monitor: 22" Samsung 2233SW Budget Getting ~$500 for birthday next week. Would extend myself to $700 as a max or so since I don't need anything bleeding edge. Resolution Given my monitor, it ends up being 1680x1050. In most games, I tend to shy away from using the highest resolution for performance reasons, but with a new computer, that should be alleviated. Usage I dabble in a little bit of everything, so this is going to be a very general and broad-usage computer. From gaming, Photoshop, some video editing, etc... it has to be outfitted as such. Also, this computer will also serve as a partial server to other computers on my network, as well as my Xbox, so I plan on having a lot of drives. Upgrade Cycle Before my current rig (almost 7 years, ugh), I was on strict 2-year cycles for upgrades/complete overhauls with all my other builds. I would like to begin getting back into that mindset. When? Jan 11th. Overclocking? No. Need OS? No. SLI/Crossfire? No. Where? Canada Computers; Barrie location. Part specifics I will be re-using my PSU, storage drives, and potentially my case. So I will need the following within my budget: CPU Intel only, and not overclocking as stated. Far past my enthusiast phase of tinkering and overclocking. Just want to drop it in and go. Motherboard While not overclocking, having a good amount of features is important. As many SATA 6Gb/s ports as possible, as well as USB 3.0. I am partial to EVGA/Gigabyte boards. RAM No real requests here, other than it'll probably be at least 8GB. Graphics Card Nvidia only; my last four cards have been with EVGA, so my preference continues there. Am open to other possibilities though. Hard Drive SSD needs to be at least 128GB, though 256GB will probably be more preferable, cost-allowing. Case Not 100% whether I will re-use my case, but I will take suggestions for cases based on the following: - I'm big on air cooling, so lots of fans while having a silent profile is beneficial (think padding, rubber grommets for hard drives etc). - Must have a lot of hard drive bays. - Do not care about its size or weight. (have been considering mini-ITX for something like a Node 304 but undecided) - Lots of cable-routing options. - Decent connection selection for front/top of case. - Preferable tool-less drive installation, but not super picky. I am open to any and all questions and suggestions anyone has, and thank you all for your time. I will answer through this thread or through PM if you prefer.

Swapping to Intel w/ Mobo would still tack on another $100 would it not? You're probably better off getting a less expensive case like a Fractal Design Core 1000 or something similar and putting that $40-$50 you saved towards the GPU or CPU. Your current total for CPU and motherboard with AMD right now is $253 according to PCPartsPicker which would be enough for an core i5, $200 for the i5 and $50 for the motherboard. Though you won't have any option to overclock with the i5 (unless you get the 3570k for $200 but the Z77 motherboard would cost more than $50). If you're not going to overclock right from the start then you probably also shouldn't be spending so much on a board, a board that's $30 less expensive would probably suit you just fine as well (eg. Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3, ASUS M5A97 R2).

Samsung 840 EVO 120GB ~$100 H87 ~$100 Core i5 4570 ~$200 8GB RAM ~$70 is already $470. $500 is a super tight budget. Probably not doable if you want a H87 for native 6Gbps ports unless you're willing to settle for a core i3? Not sure what you define as "many" but H87 chipset only comes with six SATA 6Gbps ports. If you're looking for more built into the motherboard then you'll have to pay significantly more for the higher end Z87 boards that use Asmedia / other chipsets to provide the extra SATA ports. The same goes for USB3, most if not all H87 boards only come with 2 back and 2 fronnt USB. The extra are only available through Asmedia / other chipsets founnd on higher-end Z87 boards. HDDs can't fully saturate 3Gbps fyi.

Just have a question: By i5, do you mean going with something like an i5-4570, and going on a B85, H81, or H87 chipset? If I have this right, do you know which chipset, as well as particular model, is a popular choice among those options? I suppose I only need a SATA port for the optical drive and hard drive, and a few more just in case would be nice.

So that leaves you around $250-300 for the GPU? For your motherboard it's possible to scrape some $ if you open up to other brands. You have an ASRock H87 board for $73 atm: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157384&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= With 6 SATA3 ports and quite a few USB drives apparently. I don't like H87 boards since I feel that they offer little compared to B85 but that's just me. Otherwise for H81 boards at $50 you can get them with two SATA3 ports and two normal ports. As far as I know only SSDs can take advantage of SATA3. I take it you want to future proof yourself down the line with all the extra SATA3 ports? See if you scrape some $ here and there you can make the $40 jump between a 120 Gb SSD and a 240 Gb SSD. Crucial M500 is at $140: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BQ8RM1A/?tag=pcpapi-20 Depends on how you see it but I'd prefer a bigger SSD to more SATA3 ports I can't even use. ^^ Try this on for size however, it's pretty much what SkyR said except some money saved on the mobo is thrown into a bigger SSD: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2tbIX Cheapest EVGA 760 is $250. If I'm buying a new GPU for gaming I don't think I would skimp of the GPU, but that's just me once again. Otherwise for less money you have 660 or something.

I would not. I don't like it at all. I think the price might be all right for what it is, but I don't like the parts. The CX600 is a shitty PSU. Even if the FX8350 is a good CPU (I know little of AMD CPUs), at this price range I want either an i5 4670k or a 4770k with a good overclock on it. Someone else might be able to give you a less biased view on this but as far as I know, AMD CPUs are good to buy at a lower price range than where we are with this build. I don't like XFX as a GPU brand. I would rather have Sapphire, MSI, HIS, Gigabyte or ASUS cards. Cards with custom PCBs and excellent air coolers. Not to say it's a bad card though. Just, if I'm getting a 7970, I want to spend a few extra € for better overclocking potential. Even so, as of now I would hold off buying a new PC until R9 290s with custom PCBs are available at a decent price (damn miners, lol). Such cards would be my go-to at this price range, even if I have to trade an overclocked 4670k for a stock clocked 4670 on a B85/H81 board. All in all, depending on how good the FX 8350 is, this might be an OK deal, however I wouldn't buy it since I would rather build something with parts I chose myself. I think the heatsink is an OK mid-range'd one, not sure though. Edit: Also that site gives me €1600, not €955. Maybe I can't read German or something. Also apparently the blu-ray thing costs €100. I wouldn't pay for something I don't need. :p

Edit: Also that site gives me €1600, not €955. Maybe I can't read German or something. Also apparently the blu-ray thing costs €100. I wouldn't pay for something I don't need. :p It was an offer, which lasted 5 minutes. So called Mindstar. --> Click here <-- Now you see what this PC really costs. 650€ off - is pretty much wood. Even if some parts are a overkill, you will have an awesome PC all in all. AMD FX can be overclocked. Not much as Intel, but still. Maybe its not suited for a huge overclock, but you wont need it for years with its parts. Right at this moment it's on sale again. Here. Dienstag (in the lower right corner) means Tuesday.

I needed everything new, because i gave my old pc to my parents
