Game 1
Map: The Lost Temple
The Game: Infinity Terran at 3, Ret Zerg at 6. Infinity went 1 rax – tech while Ret did his favorite (and perhaps only) ZvT opening on Temple – Early exp. Infinity’s SCV scouted Ret’s position first and saw him early expanding and also saw that Ret’s pool was a tad bit tardy. He was pumping marines from his 1 rax and sent the marines along with 4 more SCV’s. Infinity’s bunker was finished long before Ret’s sunken / lings were going to come. Ret lost some drones and his hatchery and was left with a morphing lair in his main and some zerglings. Infinity was able to tech much faster because he only went 1 rax and had gas, so he went for some vultures / wraith / scan. Right after Ret through down his hydra den, he tried to attack the bunker with roughly 12 zerglings. The full bunker and 1 repairing SCV proved heartier as all the lings died when the bunker was at 5 life. Infinity then sent in 3 vultures and Ret quit the game.
1-0 Infinity
Game 2
Map: Gaema Gowon
The Game: Infinity Terran at 8, Ret Zerg at 5. I don’t know why Ret chose Gaema (They had a list of around 10 maps, loser from previous game chooses map). TvZ is basically the only imbalanced matchup on that map. Once again Ret opened with early expand but th
is time Infinity went 2 rax. Knowing they were at the closest positions on that map, Infinity rushed with marines and 7 SCV’s. Ret started making a sunken and tried defending it with virtually all of his drones and lings, but Infinity’s slave army demolished Ret’s petty defenses.
2-0 Infinity
Game 3
Map: Plains to Hill
The Game: Infinity Zerg at top right, Ret Zerg at top left. After two easy cheese wins Infinity decided to mix it up and try his hand at ZvZ versus a Ret who is rumored to not be as good at ZvZ as he is at ZvP and ZvT. Ret opened with 9 pool while infinity went for a gas – pool after overlord build. Ret’s lings found Infinity’s base first and put major heat on Infinity as his lings had just spawned and he had to use drones / lings to defend against Ret’s rush. Ret got a small advantage, which he pressed and continued to make lings. Infinity tried sneaking lings into Ret’s base but was always unsuccessful. Ret made a large attack with around 24 zerglings on Infinity’s main just as both their spires were done and killed Infinity before any mutalisks could hatch.
2-1 Infinity
Game 4
Map: Neo Forbidden Zone
The Game: Infinity Terran at bottom left, Ret Zerg at bottom right. This game basically went down very similarly to the NFZ game in the Ret versus Legionnaire series. Infinity went goliath drop while Ret went 2 hat hydra / lurker drop. Infinity’s drop got to Ret’s base and he parked goliaths behind Ret’s minerals so that Ret’s sunken couldn’t touch them. The goliaths killed a bunch of drones and a few hydras. Ret’s only hope to defend himself was his 1 lurker which died to quadruple autocannon fire as it was burrowing. It’s safe to say Ret hates this map.
3-1 Infinity
Game 5
Map: Nostalgia
The Game: Infinity Terran at top right, Ret Zerg at bottom right. Ret opened with an early expand build while Infinity went 2 fact vultures. The vultures did absolutely nothing to hurt Ret because Ret had a sunken and lings to block the ramp to his main. Ret then went 3 hat speedling / lurker while Infinity mined up Ret’s entrance. Ret sent out lings and blazed a skinny trail to Infinity’s main. Infinity was expanding at the time but the Ling/Lurker easily put an end to that and contained Infinity. Ret then macro whored by upgrading hydras / expanding twice / making a lot of hydralisks. Infinity finally broke Ret’s lurker containment, but Ret laughed it off and sent in a huge wave of hydralisks and ended the game. This is basically exactly how ilnp beat VeG[pG] in the WDT finals on this map.
3-2 Infinity
Game 6
Map: Charity
The Game: Infinity Protoss at top right, Ret Zerg at bottom right. Ret opened with 2 hat scourge + drop + 1 hydralisk to stop a sair from getting any kills. Infinity went for the standard sair / reaver / cannon island style. Ret got drop first and double expanded at his natural island. Infinity got his first reaver really late because he decided to go 2 stargate sairs with +1 attack and expand to the middle left island fast. Ret sunkened up and started pumping hydra’s again once he had a lot of scourge. As Infinity was warping in a nexus / cannons at the upper middle island, Ret managed to sneak a 3 hydralisk drop past Infinity’s corsair fleet, after losing 1 overlord and 4 hydralisks in another spot, that killed the cannons and started spitting at the nexus. Infinity’s first reaver arrived before the hydralisks did any significant damage to the nexus. At this point they both had 2 expands and Infinity continued to patrol his sair/reaver around the map while Ret built some more +1 attack hydra’s for defense and teched to greater spire. Ret tried expanding to the middle right and the bottom left main base. Infinity saw both of them and first dropped and killed the hatchery at middle right without any retaliation from Ret. Infinity then took 2 of his reavers and dropped them on bottom left while he took his sairs and 2 more reavers to Ret’s gas natural. The dual reaver drop on each location killed the hatcheries and Ret was left with 1 expand that didn’t have any gas as he scrambled to grab more expands with his newly morphed devourer squadron. Ret then harassed the probes at Infinity’s expansions with a bunch of devourers and 1-2 guardians at a time. There was nothing the sairs could do, as devourers would have devoured them if the sairs tried to stand up to them. Infinity then tried expanding twice more and teched up to scouts / templars in a desperate attempt to rebuff the aerial harassment. With reaver / cannon / scout defense Infinity was then able to hold one of his new expansions and reclaim his expansion that had been annoyed to death by guardian / dev. Ret tried attacking Infinity’s new expansion with a hydra drop/devourers/guardians but the hydras/guards died to cannon fire and scout missiles before they could do any damage. The game ended on that note. Infinity kept expanding while Ret was starving for minerals and couldn’t expand. Ret kept trying to kill expansions but Infinity kept saving them with cannon/ templar / reaver and got a large advantage, so Ret had to quit the game.
4-2 Infinity.
Rekrul’s Rating of the Games in this Match: 2 out of 10. All of the games were 1 sided and crappy with the exception of the final game, which was quite nice.
Island maps proved to be Ret’s weakness this time around as he lost to an Infinity that he was confident he was going to beat. Ret made a great run at Liquibition by beating two very fierce opponents. He showed us that he is capable of really great macro and overall game play. Too bad his streak had to end like this. We really didn’t get a good taste of what Infinity has to offer because of the nature of the games in this series. Hopefully with his next opponent, Daaman, we will see what he is truly made of. Daaman is easily top 5 outside of Korea right now and I expect him to do very well in Liquibition.
