How did most people build at first? What kind of strategies were considered "good" back then?
I'd like to know all the nuances of playing starcraft back then :D
Edit: opps, wrong forum, can you please move this to Broodwar?

- Dominant maps at the very beginning are the hunters, and later some weird money-map callled monkey in the middle or something. The game was basically either a zealot vs zergling fest with some bunker push thrown in here and there, or capital ship rush. - The first battle.net final was between agent911 and everlast. I remember reading the report with my mouth gaping. This report opened my eye to the use of units called queens, defiler, and science vessel. - Most dominant ladder map was bridge over river styx. Dominant race was Z. Hatch before pool was almost unthinkable back then, and the only thing that non Z seems to do in ladder is make a hidden gate to the hidden area beside your base, and leave if the opponent discover it (as I remember the time that you can leave a game was much longer back then, something like 10min?). As for the Z itself, hydras are the mainstream unit back then, with soem ocassional muta lings. Then this player called Grrrr emerge from nowhere and starts to dominate the sc scene. I think he was also the first to publish a hatch before pool BO in xds site. Zileas also started to dominate at the same time with his reaver drop, which for a while become the standard strategy for P players everywhere. Wraiths and scout both have weaker air-to-air attack but much strong air-to-ground attack back then. Mass wraiths and mass scouts were both very common in team game. - All these development in non Z strategy was all for nothing as blizzard decided to change ladder maps to the nightmare that is "The Gauntlet" and other similar maps. Muta battles were basically considered to be the only strategy on these maps. I remember that at one point the top 20or so ladder players were all Z. Korea which up until this point in time was considered as the land of zvz, start to dominate around this time. Fortunately classic ladder maps like LT, styx and rivalry were introduced back not long after BW. - I don't remember too many things around the release of BW. As I recall, the top players during this period were Kali-oldschoolers (Pillars, Maynard, etc), grrr, zileas, soso, gadianton, and some time later Slayer. One thing I do remember though was the huge rant about TvP back then. DT, and the much better dragoons back then led many Terran players back to belive that the matchup was almost unwinnable. This inevitably led to the development of metal. As I recall the pioneer of metal was some player called busdriver or something in the foreign scene, and st.eagle in the korean scene. This development of metal by itself created one of the largest debate in the sc history between its avid followers and the top traditional terran players.

Grrrr... had been banned for maphacking before. He wasn't that dominating until about 1999-2000. The first finals (beta ladder) was between Agent911 (R) and Zelias (P). I think Agent won it 4-3..not sure but I know it was 7 games The first official finals was D22-Soso (R) vs ChrisLow (R). Soso won it 3-2 Season 2: LarryTheFeared (Z) 3 [5th]Fire (P) 0 Soso was incredible, one of the best gamers ever. :+:jolly:+: was amazing too, as was PH-Jester, PH-Pillars, TillerMan played BW (plays for 4KingsIntel now on W3). sVEN, nTT, and then the Quebec players (X'Ds~ team of Grrrr..., Smashe, Fire, and Killa)

2 gate/3 gate zealot (not refined with probe resting i.e. "hardcore") was standard, 1 gate play was rare until grrr... popularized it z was race of choice b/c both hydra only and muta only were so viable. people did NOT know how to use lings back then-- they were used mostly to scout and as throwaway units. actually i think even ling muta was pretty rare ~_~ for some reason i think of crazyjim~lizard as a gosu oldschool zerg user... anyone remember him? macro was so much less developed-- for example in tvp people just did NOT make more than 3 or 4 factories off of two bases
