Juan Román Riquelme 27 years
Juan Roman Riquelme started his carreer at Argentinas Juniors (same as Maradona), where he was playing when he was called to join the argentina youth (under 20) team, and won some tourney called Copa Punta del Este. After this tourney, the two biggest teams from Argentina noticed his existence and became interested in his football: River Plate and Boca Juniors.
Riquelme told his manager that he wanted to go to Boca, and he was bought by $800.000 at the year of 1995, but his debut came only at the end of 1996. In his second match he scored his first goal by Argentinian Boca Juniors.
One year after that, in 1997, he won both South American and World Cup tourneys playing for the youth team of Argentina (sub 20 again). That team had many great players we know today, such as Samuel, Placente, Cambiasso and Pablo Aimar. Prolly most of this players are taking part at the Argentina team that is going to the world cup in 2006.
Riquelme was very succesful in Boca, winning 4 Argentina's League and 2 Copa Libertadores ("UEFA Champions League" of South America), also winning the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Real Madrid in the final (2000).
In 2002 he was hired by Barcelona, who payed 25 milion Euros to Boca. He didn't adapt himself very well, even tho we still can find some good plays by him for that team. After one season Barça, he was borrowed by Villa Real. He was supposed to play there for a season only, a season that was made for his addaption. He played greatly there, scoring 15 goals in the Liga and giving many assistances.
After that season (2003/2004), he decided he didn't want to go back to Barcelona, and signed a 4 year contract with Villa.
Riquelme was cutted out of Argentina's team before the world cup 2002. Many criticised Argentina's Coach Marcelo Bielsa for that. Pekerman didn't do this mistake, and Riquelme is on of the argentina's hope for this upcoming world cup.
He is still playing for Villa, who isn't doing very well at the Liga, but it's at the Quarter-Finals of UCL, facing Inter Milan next. Let's hope he can show us his amazing football at Germany (but not against Brazil).
Videos (both are +- 25mb):
This first one, Riquelme's Magic, shows some of him in some matches of Copa Libertadores. He is the guy you need when you need to hold the ball the longer you can http://s4.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0Q0W11GRKLHYZ0LVIQYRTTOLX5
In this second one, you get some plays and some goals: http://s4.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2NY9S4LXWW4WB1P71TWKRNXLBR
Third one is a ZIP file with some nice moves, goals for barcelona and 1 for villa real http://rapidshare.de/files/16248613/riquelme.zip.html
I found some video with a lot of his plays for Villa Real, but its 140mb and I can't really upload it at Yousendit. Everytime I try some error happen.

Riquelme is sooo good... that Barcelona had to let him go on a loan to Villareal just to sign up a PSG brazilian player called Ronalindho.
Seriously how can a player cannont "adapt" to a team ? To me that's just a bad excuse to justify your lack of success. Messi is like 1000 times more talented than Riquelme, not saying he is not, but I mean, even Teves (or Tevez -spell) is better than him.

they are different kind of players playing in different positions. If you watch Saviola when he was playing for River and then his start at Barça, he played just like Messi is playing now.
I didn't post about Riquelme to say he is the best in the world. I made this post for people who doesn't know him to know some of his plays, his football style, and when you are watching the world cup maybe you will expect something nice from him when watching Argentina in group D.
He is a talent, and I consider him more talented than Messi. Maybe people can think I'm way wrong, but that's my opinion. I'm not saying Messi won't be better than him, it's just that Riquelme is better than Messi with 18 years, in my opinion.
He (Messi) will learn a lot and become a better player, no doubt about that. Every player tends to evolve and get better year after year.
ps. You knew that Riquelme was considered "the next Maradona" too? Like some other players that happened to be born after Maradona. Poor guy, argentinians have no clue of how that can get in the way of a player carreer. ------
About the adaption thing, you can call that anything they want, but a lot of VERY GOOD players don't play well in some teams for many reason we don't know. As I don't recall any europeans now, I'll name two brazilians:
Rivaldo at Milan (don't say he was old, he had 30 years there) Romario at Valencia
[edit] and Tevez is veeeeery good, it's not fair to write "even Tevez" in any comparison. When he goes to Europe people will recongnize him.

I do consider Riquelme the best midfielder in the world after Ronaldinho. And althought they play different positions, I believe riquelme is more talented than messi. I have no idea why he couldn't play at Barcelona, but Villareal is working out for him very well. I don't think you can compare tevez and riquelme yet because tevez hasn't really accomplished much, he hasn't played in europe yet.

One of my favourite players
What's the song in the first vid called?

Riquelme is great player, but no so talented as Messi. You will see ;-) I would give anything to watch Brazil vs Argentina as a WC 2k6 final ;-)

Good job, though this one wasn't as good as the others since he's only like 27!!!
Should do one about someone OLD like Gianfranco Zola or Eric Cantona or Teddy Sheringham, perhaps even Alan Shearer...
|
ateddybear: yeah, but that's the purpose of it. Since its a World Cup year, and there are only 3 months to go, then all of the next players *are* playing in the upcoming cup.
hey! I uploaded the another Zip file with moves and goals, including one SICK movement (Riquelme - SICK dribble.mpeg or something)
http://rapidshare.de/files/16248613/riquelme.zip.html <- DOWNLOAD seriously, do it.

thank you raidern. I see you have a very nice taste in football :D.

Thanks very much for this Raidern
BUT you couldn't be more wrong in comparing Riquelme when he was 18 and Messi.... when Riquelme was 18 he was only a proven player in South America, while Messi at 18 has world-class quality and is universally considered as the biggest talent currently in the world.
Messi at the moment could play in ANY team and league at the world and he would still play at his full potential (this can't be proven of course as he will probably stay in Barca for a long, LONG time, but the elements in his game that make him so good, i.e. pace, agility, dribbling, first touch and playing at such a high tempo, as well as his position (winger) are needed in EVERY football team Riquelme on the other hand couldn't and still can't do that.......Riquelme only plays well at a team where the tactics/formation suit him and when he's dictating the tempo of the game (Boca, Villareal and current Argentine national team).... Riquelme is a very "old-school number 10" player (probably one of the very very few left in the game) and that's why his style is so appealing to many people.... but he's nowhere near as good as Messi is, not now and most definitely not when he was 18 :D
|
you got me 100% wrong
I told Riquelme is better than Messi nowadays, when Messi is 18 years old. I can't predict future. I didn't mean Riquelme with 18 years was better than Messi with 18. I said Riquelme with 27 is, in my opinion, a more important player, a better player than Messi.
[edit] To make it clear once and for all, in a Brazil vs Argentina match, the player I fear most is Riquelme.
|
Riquelme and Messi have different taks on the pitch. i would fear more Messi cuz he is unpredictable, fast and its not hard to overplay Brazil defenders~~ Riquelme is a playmaker, who shots from wide rather rarely. So we cannot compare these two players at all ~~
