Roberto Baggio 38 years FIFA Best Player of the Year 1993
Today I uploaded some videos of this italian player, one of my favourite. Roberto Baggio started his carreer in Vicenza, a team of Italian Serie C, and in 1985 he was hired by Fiorentina, where he played for five seasons and became an idol there. At the World cup of Italy, in 1990, he made an awesome goal against old Czechoslovakia, also making a nice performance at the whole tourney. Because of this, he was hired by Juventus, the team he became more known on.
He won a Scuddeto, a Cup of Italy and the UEFA Cup there. Also, playing for juventus, he was awarded the best player of the year of 1993, a very important title for any player. He arrived at the World Cup of USA, 1994, as the best player in the world. People expected too much from him, but the future would not smile to his football.
He could not play 100%, because he was devasted by the whole season, and played the whole world cup at his limit, with the heart. As we all know, he lost Italy's last penalty against Brazil, and that mistake would follow him for his entire carreer, as we would see.
After that, in 1995, he went to Milan, and won another Scuddeto, after playing 2 seasons. But his ups and downs forced Milan to sell him to Bologna, a lesser team, where he scored 22 goals in 30 matches, showing he was still alive.
At the World Cup of 1998 the world of football had changed, big names were brazilian phenomenom Ronaldo and the bald stupid french Zidane. Baggio was a replacement at the Azzurra team, but he entered in some games and showed his class once again to the world.
A curious moment. When Italy faced France in the quarter-finals of that World Cup. Baggio at the list of Italian players at the penalty decision. Big pressure on him. One. Two. He scores and silences all the ghosts.
He also played 2 years for Inter Milan, with not much success, and ended his carreer playing for Brescia (I hope I'm right at this). He did not play the World Cup of 2002, but I'm sure with all his skill and class, he could help Italy in its journey.

Somehow Roberto Baggio never impressed me to the extent some others have. Maybe it's his style or charisma. Quite possibly that repulsive pony tail influenced me a whole bit as well.
Although after seeing the highlights I think he's better than what I used to think of him. Seems like he could touch the ball in some way many will never succeed to do. The way some balls dropped during a free kick to fly over the goalkeeper into the goal is quite amazing. Awesome shots where he takes the ball right out of the air in there as well.
Still I don't think I will ever consider him a legend (there's not many in my book anyway). Amazing player yes, legend no.

seconded!
being in the states i barely follow soccer (>_> football ok) at all but it's nice to read about past good players when they're as well written as this along with pictures and videos etc.
shit some of those shots were amazing i didn't even understand how he pulled some of those off its like the goalie can't even do anything

it was never supposed to be professionally written, and yes, my english is fucked. The little bit of english I know was improved here at tlnet, so I'm happy with the little bit I know, if you can read what im writing.
the videos and story i post here have only one purpose, to entertain those who like football.

i hate george best, and of the goals ive seen of him, they werent of the same quality of baggios. besides, george best destroyed his life by drinking and not turning up to training and ruined his time at manutd
