Hello teamliquid'ers!
I liked the idea of celebrating milestone posts with some useful strategy investigation (Splash Damage Compendium by mighty Empyrean) very much, so today I'm going to entertain you Yeah, it's my 100th post here! Muahaha!!!
TIME TO FIRST 6 ZERGLINGS IN COMMON ZERG BUILD-ORDERS
Subject of investigation: time to first 6 zerglings in common zerg build-orders Map type: non-island with 8 mineral fields Starcraft version: 1.12b Statistical software: MS Excel XP Additional equipment: Nokia 1100 build-in stop-watch
Terminology: 4,5,6,7-pool - drones, pool, 6 zerglings 8,9-pool - drones, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings 10-pool - 9 drones, extradrone, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings 12-pool - 9 drones, overlord, +3 drones, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings 9-hatch 8-pool - 9 drones, hatchery, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings 10-hatch 9-pool - 9 drones, extradrone, hatchery, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings 12-hatch 11-pool - 9 drones, overlord, +3 drones, hatchery, pool, overlord, 6 zerglings pool - swimming pool 2nd hatchery was always built at the main base
Methodology: Build-orders were performed on modified Lost Temple map on fastest speed, 5 times each. When the first 6 zerglings were build, the game was immediately finished and game time duration was passed to Excel. The fastest of 5 was accepted as a final result.
The following results were observed: 4-pool: 1:59 5-pool: 2:04 6-pool: 2:10 7-pool: 2:18 8-pool: 2:23 9-pool: 2:27 10-pool: 2:38 12-pool: 2:57 9-hatch 8-pool: 3:03 10-hatch 9-pool: 3:07 12-hatch 11-pool: 3:23
Comments: First of all, 4-pool is faster then 5-pool. 10-pool is slower then 9-pool. 9-hatch 8-pool is not much slower then 12-pool, but allows you to have 8 zerglings (hatchery and pool finish simultaneously).
Further analysis: Having found the time to first 6 zerglings, it's interesting to consider the vulnerability of build orders to cheese ZvZ rushes. The build-order is said to be vulnerable, if the first 6 zerglings of your opponent come to your base and have enough time to do enough damage before your own zerglings finish. I assume the latter time to be equal to the duration of destroing the pool by 6 zerglings. It is because even if you decide to defend with drones, your opponent will score enough drone kills to do considerable damage. This time is easily measurable and equals 12.5 sec. The travel time is subject to map and starting locations. Travel time between diagonal positions of Nostalgia (taken as the "average" value) is 45 sec. Thus, if
your_bo_time > opponent_bo_time + 55 sec. (1)
your build-order is assumed risky (on map Nostalgia). The picture below is the graphical representation of riskinesses of build-orders, green ones being safe versus 4-pool rush, and red ones being vulnerable to early rushes. Note that 9-pool is safe according to the figures. 10-pool build's riskiness completely depends on map and locations.

If you have the replays showing the pool speeds, then it will shut up everyone who says 5 pool is faster than a 4 pool.
|
Thanx. Now you should compare those times with 9/10 gate and 2 rax times and see how effective each one is.
|
anybody says that? 5 pool is better than 4 pool, but not faster
|
Awesome post, your conclusions are clearly worded (although the table or picture does not work for me), and you put a lot of time into research.
Looking forward for more ;D

You should also record how fast certain builds can recover from the harsh economic disadvantage of being a 'rush' build. 4 pool may get the lings out 5 seconds faster, but the extra drone of the 5 pool will get you back on your feet that much faster.
Also, I would like to use this thread to reveal the newest of zerg cheese builds (invented by me, of course): The 3 pool
Just kill a drone at the start and laugh your ass off when your opponent has no idea what the hell you are doing.

no u go harrass wit hthe 4th drone and dont let him lay down a barracks. while ur 3 drones get the drugs.

using your first drone to scout and to annoy your opponent seems more effective ^_^

Simple mathematical logic, naturally assuming a perfect drone split at the start of game:
4 Pool: Start with 50 minerals. 4 drones make 5 trips = 160 collected. After 5 trips, 210 minerals total. Lay down pool.
5 Pool: Start with 0 minerals after making 5th drone. 4 drones make 2 trips = 64. 5 drones make ~4 more trips = 160. After ~6 trips, 224 minerals total. Lay down pool. Get an OL.
Why is there an argument over this? 5 trips is faster than ~6 trips.

Haha, that was a very well thought out and very well written guide. You obviosuly put a lot of time into it Could you release the replays some time? I'm sure many people would like to know exactly what you did.
And thanks for the acknoledgement on my little splash damage thing. I just wrote that because I was bored in class one day because I don't really give a damn about the importance of Haversian canals.
The picture doesn't work, though.
