Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, but it is Starcraft related so I'll post it here.
My name is Mike Jensen and I've been a digital sculptor for a few years. I have experience making professional video tutorials for sculpting, so I feel comfortable enough with it now that I'd like to stream sessions of sculpting.
Special thanks to Orb for influencing me to do this!
If you've ever wanted to know how characters are made for video games or movies, this would be an ideal place to learn a few tips and tricks.
Streaming: Tonight (Friday 7/15/2011) at 8pm PST Making: Artanis high polygon model from scratch. Stream Length: A few hours at least Stream Location: http://www.justin.tv/jviikel
EDIT:
Streaming Session 1 Images
Thanks for coming and hanging out with me guys! The first stream went pretty well except for the times when the stream died. I've added some start-> finish images for the first session. Mainly during the first session I was just trying to take the simple malproportioned base mesh and gett the overall shape and silhouette correct. And to hit upon most of the muscle groups. I'll be streaming tonight again at 8PM PST.
Start-> Finish:
I'll put the other two images in the following spoiler tag:

END EDIT:
Who Am I?
I'm a semi-professional 3d sculptor and modeler who specializes in mechanical characters. Here's a few samples of my work:
Here is my most recent quick sculpt (about 2 hours):
You can find the rest of my public work here:
http://mikejensen.deviantart.com/gallery/
I have two ideas on what to stream:
1. Existing Starcraft characters, such as Artanis tonight. These will be easier because there is less preparation
2. Working with the team liquid community to invent (design) our own race (ignoring balance problems of course).
For the second one I haven't figured everything out yet, but so far my idea for it is to have ideas contributed to this thread, and after a few ideas we can come up with a general theme for a race. Then we can all pick on one character to be created for the week. I don't have plans yet to make low poly characters to actually be put into the game, but rather high poly models made for still images.
I haven't worked out all the kinks on how to organize creating a new race, but when I do work them out I'll make a writeup and post it here.
Thanks for checking out the stream and thread, and I hope we can make some cool stuff together!

Wow, that marine looks sick, will definitely check your stream out.
|
Thanks for checking it out! I'm going live now and I'm gonna start the sculpt in 5 minutes =)
|
Wow, that first one should be a new terran unit in HoTS. I can't even imagine what it would be able to do.
|
Excuse me but, thats NOT professional?!?!
That stuff looks incredible.
|
Thanks for streaming, your clear and concise commentary is really good for the layman. Addictive streaming at its best.

@phodacbiet: Thanks man! Look forward to seeing you there -).
@KimJongChill: Haha =).
@xlarva: Semi Professional I'd name it. I've never worked in a studio as of yet. Hopefully that will change soon,
@qck: Thanks for coming out! I'll try to keep my commentary on the mark I got kinda tired and sidetracked last night.
@question: Thanks for coming out! haha.
@GGzerG: haha me too. Thanks a ton.
@Djagulingu: Thanks man =). I'm not sure who samba is.
@SmoKim: Thanks =)
@Probe1: Thanks man! I wanna try to get a job at a studio in WA before I consider moving =).
@Alver: Thanks =).

I wasn't kidding. With those skills you could definitely work in the video game industry in my uninformed opinion. Just don't forget Fenix's dreads//nerve endings

Hey guys just wanted to let everyone know I'm going live now and tonight we're gonna work on artanis armor for a few hours to get things blocked in. Then do a bit with proportions overall when we have the armor in context. I hope you come out chat with us and enjoy!
|
Very impressive work there! I'll have to check out the VODs as I can't watch live (time zone.. gotta go to work right now).
Keep it up Mr. Jensen!
|
Is there some kind of 3D gallery out there that would let us appreciate these in their full 3D glory. That "Ghost" and "Firebat" is insane. May I recommend an "Immortal" or "Medic"?
|
Excellent work man. Really loving the sculpts, expecially the firebat and the mech soldier. I am just starting to learn 3d right now for a summer project. Sculpting is on my next to do list so tutorials would be awesome.
|
Tuned in today and was really impressed! I'd recommend anyone who is remotely interested in this type of stuff (regardless if you are an artist yourself or not) to at least check it out. Personally I found it interesting enough to entertain me for a good 3 hours and the extent of my artistic ability is a little bit of drawing every now and then. There is a lot of communication between him and the viewers, talking about his work and about other random things from Legend of Zelda to Count Dracula . So yeah, tune in and check it out!
