Hmmm, seeing someone recommend T.O.O.H. made me realize that I recommended them under Rad a Trest which is actually just the album by them i had in mind while writing that. So yea... Go check out T.O.O.H. (The Obliteration of Humanity) while I go edit my post
Also, can anyone suggest any bands very similar in style (super progressive technical) to them?
The only ones that come to mind would be Death's later work. Atheist, Cynic, Sadist maybe, Control Denied.... I'm having trouble finding bands that push the envelope in this direction while also maintaining structure, sound, and production. I would have to somehow squeeze Cephalic Carnage into this mix even though they're much more death metal oriented... That's not bad though.
Also, for the OP, I prolly shoulda mentioned Psycroptic.... Trying to avoid the more well known bands to recommend as you already know those.
and while i'm at it:
not nearly as technical as whichever necrophagist song was cited earlier. Tis still good considering it's just 1 guy and a drum machine. Very good rhythm
My favorite Black Metal band is Hate Forest, and supposedly the eventual sole member was supposed to start a new band. I know some of the guys went to Drudkh, and Autumn Aurora is an amazing album, but Battlefields is probably in my top 5 albums of all time so I'd like to hear what this guy came up with since the end of Hate Forest.
the problem with this whole thread is that he asked for technical death metal (or something similar) and everyone is just like "OMG A METAL THREAD TIME TO POST ALL MY FAVORITE METAL BANDS". that's the impression i got on page one, anyway. and i skipped the rest because yeah. EDIT: after finally looking at the other pages i retract this statement mostly, it got back on track.
technical death metal sounds a lot like regular death metal to the ear, just a lot more complex, and a lot of people might just assume it was pure death metal. two bands i know of that can be described as technical death metal are Anata and Arsis. i guess a close cousin to technical death metal would be brutal death metal (the brutality usually having more to do with themes than style) ... and death metal (there are still some bands that classify themselves as and play pure death metal, like kataklysm from canada).
i like wintersun and dimmu borgir and all these bands you guys keep naming but cmon, they're not what the guy asked for.
EDIT: i'd recommend a band, Daath (semi-local to me i guess but they're on a major record label now i think), as they're progressive death metal and progressive death metal bands can also have similar form to what you're asking about. they might not be exactly what you're looking for, but i think you should try them out anyway.
Psycroptic are great. Sadly however, they have the misfortune of being based in Tasmania, a dreadfully small band scene. I'll throw out Sleep terror here, too. Some wacky and highly technical stuff. As for similar works to Cynic/etc, a reasonable number of the techdeath bands I mention have similar influences and use of jazz parts.
As for posting favourite metal bands, that always happens. All the ones I posted were just the genres asked for, though
And yes, the Metal Archives is brilliant. An arrogant website with high standards = always useful for the customer. I put the occasional review on there myself (same name as my account here).
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.
proxies? a_a
that's so sad... i found out about scar symmetry that way and they're one of my favorite bands now :\

Is all of the shit you guys are talking about this like this horrible crap?
No. Just some of it. Personally I think any band that gets so "technical" (uh too much drums or something?) that they are bereft of any melody, even if only a basic one, simply become a pure wall of sound with no real tempo, rhythm, groove, "beat", or any other reason to listen to music. plus you eventually tune out the intensity factor (the only thing that sort of sound gives you).
There are a lot of bands in this thread that give me this feeling..

It's generally a very bad idea when you are a newbie to start off with the hardest thing to get into. I even put a warning that it wasnt catchy. It's a complete waste of time to someone who doesn't know anything about metal to try and listen to such a band.
This is a lot more complex than just random noises.
These are two posts that stroke me about Gorguts, when someone was debatting that Opeth was a lot better.
''Comparing Opeth to Gorguts is like comparing a fine piece of artwork to a child's fingerpainting, one is much more advanced and artistically worthwhile than the other.''
''a lot of great art requires further analysis than just perceiving the picture. Gorguts, likewise requires further explication than merely listening. But really they're like trying to compare Salvador Dali to Vincent Van Gogh. Different worlds of their own.''
i don't think i've seen them mentioned here, but Decapitated definitely falls into Technical Death metal. doesn't really sound like Necrophagist, but Decapitated is still awesome. the drumming and guitars = holy shit. try these songs: Spheres of Madness, Post Organic, The Eye of Horus. (the drummer died after getting into a car crash, though, RIP. )
Vehemence is pretty good, too, though it's really more melodic/brutal than technical. you still might like it.
I think I figured out what the problem is for me. I just hate metal. I like music that is much more melodic(hopefully the right music-lingo) and harmonious. But at the same time I like discordiant sounds.. Dunno.. See: Squarepusher - Port Rhombus, *trying to think of something popular* I can't, so listen to this youtube.
How would you describe this? Besides shitty, for those of you who just don't like it :p
Ya, totally different from your guy's stuff. Well, enjoy your thread

Cynic -- my favorite from that genre. They just made 1 album I think, "Focus" Atheist Death Biomechanical Cryptopsy Demilich Meshuggah Nile Theory in Practice Spiral Architect
I don't particularly like the genre though. That's just some I've stumbled upon. I'm a prog rock fan, and also several kinds of metal but it's getting less as the years go by.
