I remember some folks used to have the same problem, but I can't find anything with search (here or google). I also tried running it in XP compatibility mode and a few other things, but no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Try updating your vid card driver if you havent and maybe try lowering hardware acceleration. its under advanced settings < troubleshooting in xp when you right click the desktop. Maybe someone with vista can help you more >_>.

just go with a multiple boot instalation: vista and xp (i'm guessing 2g of hdd space for xp is not a problem) or you could try something just for your own piece of mind run a game, any game, at 640x480 (at starcrafts color bit depth). if you get the same bugs as in starcraft then it might be a compatibility issue: video card - resolution/refresh.

xM: Yea, I might do that. I'm going to try reinstalling it first... if that doesn't work I'll test it on something else.

From your description it sounds like a drives issue. I have experienced similar issues with bad video drivers. Check around, if yours are up-to-date try to look for some beta ones.

Really can't figure out what it is =( I used my old computer to play for the tourney yesterday, but I'm going to have to dual boot XP on this one if I can't figure it out soon.

I've got Starcraft running perfectly fine on Vista 64 and I've got the 8800 gtx as well. I have encountered messed up colours a couple of times in SC but this can be fixed by restarting the application. (It also happens quite rarely anyway, normally when you alt tab). It's strange that you get so many problems though... FYI, I'm running Nvidia drivers: 11/09/2007, 7.15.11.6369 (from device manager) Also, have you disabled Starcraft on the DEP (Data Execution Prevention.. or something like that)? Try also running SC in compatability mode for WinXP if you haven't already. Have you also tested other games on your comp? As it may not be a SC-related issue. :S Last question in my head is whether you are running SCBW with a vanilla install and with all other external programs disabled? I.e. without any third-party shit that could potentially interfere with it? Try running SC in safe mode for example... EDIT: Just remembered... I disabled auto-defragging and search-engine indexing in Vista even before I installed SC.. so if you're desperate you can try disabling those (good to do anyway..) and see if maybe that is the answer...

It plays WC3, CS:S, WoW, and virtually every other game I have just fine, except SC.....I think it doesn't want me to play anymore. *thinking of getting a new HDD, CPU, and Mobo*

For some reason. SC must have a low priority? Sounds like a noob hypothesis-

Here's something odd that I realized though. After going into safe mode and loading up SC, the game actually runs perfect. With generic windows drivers. Uhhhh, without Nvidia drivers. Yea. . . . So it's clearly a Nvidia driver problem. I can't think of ANYTHING else that it could be at this point. I tried it on my brother's machine too, (he has the same setup except for he has the ATI 2900XT) and it worked flawlessly. There's kind of a problem with diagnosing it though because what I'm experiencing is so slight that 99% of people wouldn't notice it... so how can I expect a driver company to? They'd say it works fine and I'm crazy. To re-explain the exact problem (in bnet first): when you switch screens... there is a very fast, but definite "fade to black" effect happening. For those of you running machines without this problem, the screen changing in SC is absolutely instant with maybe a super-fast flicker. If you're having the problem, it doesn't instantaneously change like that, it fades out first (like I said, it's fast, but it's definite). Then ingame, there is some weird... lag/glitch. It's very hard to notice if you haven't played SC forever, but it's there and it fucks the sensitivity of my mouse up (which is usually fucked anyways, so this is a big 181818a). Anyways, I'm considering trading this for a 2900XT... that's how bad it is. It runs everything else perfect on the highest settings too, so it's not a problem with the card. But if it won't run the bestest game ever created, it's a piece of shit. I guess I could always pay some crazy driver hacker to figure it out and make me special "Skew Drivers for StarCraft". HEHE.... eh.

1.) Alt tab a lot until the colors turn out right (not very reliable) 2.) Force windows Vista basic graphics mode (something like that). For me, this can be done by running media player classic or something that can play a DivX vid (which for some reason forces Vista Basic), run a divx vid, and just set to pause and run SC. I don't seem to be experiencing the same lag as you guys though...

I'm having the exact same problem regarding the fade-out between screen changes, and the "laggy" feel during gameplay. I JUST got this new PC yesterday. Gigabyte P35-DS3R MOBO Intel Quad-Core Q6600 XFX GeForce 8800GT 512 4GB RAM 500GB HD This bitch runs Crysis on Very High settings, but I have the same problem as you with SC. I don't get the problem with the colors, but just the menus and the in-game lag. Just like you said, - as though you you were running Winamp in the background with a crappy computer - type lag. Also in the searching for games menu alot of the time the lag bars don't show up all the way. My guess is that it's an Nvidia drivers thing too. Really sucks. 8-/

I do get some graphical glitches in the brood war menu, but when it plays at least as good as it did on XP, but I had to make sure my mx300 had the right drivers/settings to make it feel right. I also get that slight delay when changing screens, and have had some games on Hamachi, but its generally hard to get Hamachi working properly :| I will never disable all the Vista-specific things, then I'll just dual boot XP, but I have turned off the firewall/security warning a.s.o. (like I did on XP anyways), and I use compability mode for winxp, although I think it makes no difference on Brood War.

It literally took me a few months to figure this out, it's a ghetto solution but its nvidia's fault for releasing fail drivers so I'm 99% certain that this is the only way. This is also why I'm 99% sure no one else on ati cards and integrated cards are having this issue. Updating drivers, setting compatibility modes, and any other off-the-top-of-your-head-fix will not help. This problem only arises when your computer is brought out of hibernate, standby, and most likely anything you have set to trip when you leave your computer on for a while (including auto shut down of the monitor): right click on my computer > properties look around for your device manager under display adapters, right click and disable the one you have Then right click and enable once again Problem solved. No restart needed. No xp dual boot needed.

Right click on starcraft.exe, go to Properties Go to compatibility tab Check "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition" This solved the problem and the best part is that it works with Chaoslauncher too
