I just got an email from my webprovider....
hes saying my computer is being used for email spamming but might not be my fault but may be some virus
used AVG to get rid of the trojans i had.... now he says i should get a firewall
but a lot of ppl on bnet say: "fuck im lagging its my firewall"
does this happen to everyone with firewalls? why? and does it mean ill never be able to play with obs or ob someone ??

I think it's because your mail port would be open and some people are using your computer like it's a mail server, and not a virus.
|
desktop firewalls are useless. get rid of the worm or whatever has infected your pc by using antivir/spybot s&d and you should be fine.
|
Your computer really is pretty messed up
I used to use Zonealarm but somehow it closes BW down randomly even when you are in a game giving you a disconnect. I could never figure but was sure ZA was the cause.. knew some other people it happens to also

Veg if you have the money get a router, they should not cost too much, I'm guessing about $50, and it includes a hardware firewall that you can easily configure for bnet play.
Software firewall is just a pain in the ass and annoying as hell. Also you should probably rethink some of the software you are using;
IE = worms via VBscript. Think about getting another browser, there are some excellent alternatives like opera or firefox.
Outlook Express = mail virus. I suggest Thunderbird, also a mozilla product.
Online virus scans = not as good as real ones. Consider getting norton antivirus 2004, a great security+virus protection.
ANd people who are blaming their firewall for lag is plain stupid -_-

i suggest to make a router yourself as most of you, i think, have a old computer at home (like 90mhz blahblah) which you could reuse as router/fileserver/jukebox/firewall or even host your homepage there, at least i did that, until the puter fried. it's pretty easy with linux, just search for some complete solutions, you should find alot like fli4a (i think that's correct name?) which fits on a floppy disk. it's plainly cheaper and does more.

opera isn't that great... or so i've heard... mozilla and firefox are better (the latter being the best) i still use IE tho :D

just to metion that: like 1-2months ago i got like 10 spam mails per day from my email account providers and all kinds of normal providers, which were obviously all fake, saying i had a trojan or sth. which would send spam mails... i would check that first... if you still have an OS with dos mode, download f-prot antivirus for dos, it finds more than other scanners do, as you do not run the normal OS they have infected...

btw. i got a hardware firewall and nothing lags, only thing with those is, that you must forward a port to your pc to be able to open games on battle.net everyone can join, but that is like 1min of work...

http://www.mozilla.org/ have a look at the name of the mozilla browser...
and norton anti virus sucks and you don't need such a huge software. f-prot and antivir for example do a better job and you can download them easily. http://www.free-av.com/
btw getting a router is a good idea but not really necessary. you'll also have to cope with port forwardings and stuff. my old router for example was too slow and blocked my con as long as i ran emule. the new one had a firmware problem which costed me random disconnects (my bnet acc has like 75 discs now) until a new update came. so why would you take such a risk. simply use an adware scanner and an anti virus software and you'll be fine.

Anyone have a WRT45G [ I think that's it ] Wireless G Linksys router?
With just about every other router I've been able to port forward correctly and have Starcraft and BitTorrent run fine. [ I do pc troubleshoot stuff for friends ] but this one just confuses me.

there's nothing wrong with software firewall if you know how to use it

So long as port 6112 UDP/TCP is open, you will be able to play SC just fine.

I heard 6113 may be used too I think, or up to 6118, not sure... but yeah, you can run firewalls so long as they're configured for it. People who don't have them configured with 6112 open are the ones who can't host games (get error Lat too High) and lag with more than 2 people in a game.

And yeah as suggested, I use Zone Alarm, works just fine on default with BW.

I use ZA...I have to disable to create games on b.net or else no one else can join...they get that latency too high error message.

Hmm weird... my ZA works fine.

Ports 6112 to 6119 have to be open Incoming/Outgoing with TCP/UDP Protocols

a firewall basically means your computer uses a selected few ports to do things, so even if you have a trojan application on your computer it cant send any mail out.
the problem this has with starcraft is starcraft requires ports 6112-6119 to be played online.
the solution here is to just allow ports 6112-6119 (UDP and TCP, i don't know if starcraft requires TCP) with whichever firewall you end up using.
you will usually find the place to change these settings in a section titled 'port forwarding' or a sub section called 'ports' that may have 'forwarding' as a child section.

Get ZoneAlarm; it shouldn't cause you to lag (nor should any other firewalls, unless it's a really bad one or something). Be warned, though: many modern viruses are programmed to terminate any anti-virus and firewall processes running on your computer, so it might not work =/. PS: With ZoneAlarm -- and probably other software firewalls -- you'll still be able to create/join games and everything too .
Bill I had Zonealarm for some time (still do) and I don't know why, but after my brother play like some other game like counter-strike or something, I leave the Zonealarm on and goto SC:BW - when I try to connect to server, it stops at Querying something something (w/e) and it stops there, I press ESC to reconnect, but then it freezes at black screen and have to restart. This happens often. Problem?
