Are you kidding me? This is possibly the biggest waste of money I've ever seen.

Not that I'm anti-feminism and stuff, but it's just so unimportant. How can you get offended by a sign not being in your gender? Maybe it's just easy talking, maybe I'd be offended too if only female-signs would be out there. But I can't imagine that. I wouldn't give a damn about those signs to be honest.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_War edit: Only George W. could pull off something that actually beats 9/11 in terms of the cost in American lives and treasure. p.s. Sorry for the hijack, continue talking about signs now.

It may seem so petty and simple and insignificant, but I think that is because you take for granted the status quo, when maybe you should be questioning it. Another seemingly silly thing to call into question is our use of language when we refer to humanity as "Man." Or refer to a person of unspecified sex as "he." This seems so common to us that it seems weird to even talk about it. But really, if you get into it, the fact that we DO talk this way indicates a very deep, ingrained bias that favors men over women. The language we use is just a symptom of a larger culture that oppresses or degrades women. Have whatever opinion you want, but do yourself and everyone else a favor, and THINK first. The process of being critical and questioning should never stop. Morality is in the process of questioning, not in the process of answering.

A woman who feels she doesn't have the same rights as a man will be reminded of that every time she sees those signs, and they will appear to her as a symbol of that discrimination. I believe this to be a wrong approach, but to a certain degree it's understandable.

We get the idea when the don't walk sign shows the high five symbol in red and the white guy taking a dash across the concrete danger area. You don't need to break it down into gender forms. Shit why not make it a black man strutting or a baby crawling. case closed liberal pussies.

[/sarcasm?] on topic,,, don't most liberated western women wear pants anyway? so I would consider the "male" pictogram gender neutral

This initiative is all about exposure. It's about seeing a woman figure instead of a man figure (or vice versa) all of a sudden and reflecting on gender inequality in society as a result. In that sense, I think it's a pretty well-executed idea. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with political correctness, read the article more thoroughly instead of jumping to conclusions.

The point is that we ought to be critical of how we see gender, sexuality, and everything else. We ought to ask ourselves what it means to be a man or a woman, and WHY it means that. Does it always mean that? Should it mean that? Etc. I praise the effort of these people because it shows they are attempting to be critical. The result of their efforts may fall short of what is optimal, but I think it is better to be thinking and critically engaging with culture and stereotypes and ideas, rather than just accepting the status quo.
