Everyone has the right to demand whatever the fuck they want in America. Whether or not it will happen is what should be discussed. If people are offended by something they have the _right_ through freedom of speech to voice their displeasure. Its the same reason people have the _right_ to argue for taking God out of the pledge of allegiance. So dont babble about "what right do they have" and dont babble "we dont have an obligation to uphold their beliefs" no, obligations aside you have the _expectation_ as an American that supposedly supports free speech to hear their side of the story. The course of action will be decided in another fashion. So basically, according to that same thing which gives them their rights to demand the show be taken off the air, no one can force the show off the air ;p

Basically re read it. I said the action to be taken is of a different discussion, complaining about anything is everyone's right in the US. Its called freedom of speech. He said "doesnt give them the right to demand its removal" when in fact hes wrong. I covered that and the ethics of that which he challenged.

Eh, I misused basically, sorry I didn't mean it as a sum-up of your post.

the whale on the moon? did you not piss yourself? that was one of the best endings to a SP i've ever seen. the best probably being the one episode where cartman gets back at that 9th grader or maybe the jennifer lopez hand.

some of the episodes are legitimately deep, some make good points, some are pointless, usually intentionally. Sure. It's points are about as deep as the ones made by Masta Shake.
what kinds of points has masta shake even made?

OT: A more general question regarding right to free speech: Shuld this right be protected even when the content is particularly offensive to certain groups? Yeah, it's probably only going to be ardent Catholics who are offended by this episode. But what is "offensive content"? The denotative definition is very subjective... Are there any "sacred" subjects, or is blatant vulgarity also protected under the right to free speech?
I, for one, don't give a shit. I simply abstain from content I find disturbing or vulgar or idiotic in any way. But people are always going to care too much. The general agreement is that a line is drawn somewhere (certain curse-words are allowed on cable TV, but not others..?) but who the heck is supposed to decide where the line is drawn?
|
In the US, the Federal Communications Commission decides where the line is drawn in TV and radio, and they are the ones who enforce these guidelines. Its headed by five commissioners, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 5-year terms. One of those commissioners is designated chairman by the President. The FCC is supposed to be an independent regulatory commission, but the way it is set up, its ideologies are aligned to the President's liking.
Right now, there is no distinction to what is acceptable and what is unacceptable content. Obviously obscenity and pornography is not protected under free speech. But what about indecency? The FCC does not want to allow "indecent" content to be broadcasted, but the term is extremely vague, and because of that, it can be heavily abused.
Basically, if content is deemed indecent to a few people, that content will be taken off the air. Small groups of the religious right can, and do, write letters to the FCC and fine those running indecent broadcasts. So the opinions of few dictate what the masses can watch on TV.
I find it amazing that people can be offended by content that you can choose not to be exposed to at all. It's just too much regulation for a problem that can be solved by a simple press of a button.
This article talks about Howard Sterns recent jump to satellite radio, and it goes in depth about the FCC and what is deemed indecent material.
|
So basically, there's a big fucking grey area, and the squeeky wheel gets the oil. The solution is to write the FCC using thick expensive paper and caligraphy pens, so they think you're an old rich white guy and then maybe your opinions will influence what is considered to be "general opinion" on the definition of indecency.

I dont know why everyone starts screaming like little bitches and get offended by almost everything nowadays. You dont have to watch the show if you dont like it. The disclaimer tells you to not watch the show. Oh how much I hate christians. I really want to make that religion go away. I dont mind using alot of violence while whiping them off the surface of earth. The world would be alot better whitout them. This does not mean that I like any other religions, they can be killed or enslaved too while we are at it. It's just that I kinda notice christians more in everyday life.
EDIT:Did you notice the alien in the car window in the episode?
If I based every atheist's point of view off of yours I'd feel the same way. Good thing one person's idiocy doesn't rule everyone's thought process, isn't it?!

Humor is almost always presented at the expense of someone else. Even something as basic as a stupid "blond joke" can be considered offensive. Southpark has at times taken this to the extreme, not only ridiculing whatever they feel fit at the moment, but also being offensive for the sake of being offensive and in turn spawning huge amounts of reactions from whatever party is being mocked. Southpark has been doing this forever as it's a great source of attention. They often take subjects that are considered very inflammatory, groups that are well-respected and such and deal with them in a harsh way which makes people like you react just like you're doing right now.

Good thing one person's idiocy doesn't rule everyone's thought process, isn't it?! Well since you have common sense you just simply take me as an idiot and ignore me more or less. And thats perfectly fine with me.
Now a kinda related thing has happended to me on another community site. Some kid used a fake username to make "death threats" to some deeply christian kids. Now their parents got choked and says they are going to the police if noone comes forward and admits to doing it. Of course the kids could easily just blocked the user that got banned after just an hour but oh no, they cant just ignore a jackass and must proceed to take their thing to court. Obviously I'm one of the major suspects since I am known for not liking christians and having some anti christian propaganda on my personal stuff on the community. They cant check the ip and clear me until the case actually makes it to the police. Of course I'm not stupid enought to make any personal death threats to people on a forum. Especially not if they are under 18 as it seems in this case since the parents are involved.
Well another interesting aspect would be if someone had made threats to nazis, jews or any other group. I'd say that there would be a pretty obvious court case if someone had said something like that to a jew and a if someone would have threated to kill a nazi noone would have cared. Of course a known nazi would most likely be banned from the site before anyone could say anything to them.
