I'm trying to implement an RTS AI for a game, and obviously there are a lot of challenging problems to solve, so I thought I would ask a few questions here, since a lot of Brood War folks have a lot of experience with RTS AIs.
First off, does anyone know of an RTS game where the AI was really fun to play against? Especially games where the AI starts off with very little and has to build it up like the player (aka like Starcraft)? Has anyone encountered a Starcraft UMS like this?
Especially interesting would be if anyone has had fun playing against an AI that is still fun after the first ~5-8 minutes. Why 5-8 minutes? Making an AI that follows a build order for 5-8 minutes is very easy. That's what it feels like the brood war base AI does. It has a plan, tries to execute it for about 8 minutes, and if the game goes longer than that, the AI doesn't really do anything.
Lastly, I know there are Brood War AI competitions, does anyone know how to get in touch with those people? I'm sure they have a bunch of techniques that would be better that the custom stuff I randomly come up with. For example, I just wrote an algorithm for an AI to decide where to place a building, and that was pretty complicated. I'm sure someone else has solved that problem better than I could.
Thanks for the help!
Also, sorry if this is not the right forum for these questions. Just let me know.
