mod edit: YouTube vods and VioleTAK's (yes he's a real person!) comments:
On March 09 2007 06:00 VioleTAK wrote: Hello.
I enjoyed NonY and Day[9]'s commentary on the MSL finals so much, immediately I knew this had to be made into a much more solid viewable media. What I mean by that is that many Starcraft fans sometimes do these kinds of commentary of their own, or subtitles for favorite VODs, but these things tend to disappear in a short time, and after a couple of months already forum posts start to pop up every once in a while asking 'where can I get that old commentary/subtitle...' and then you have to find and download the correct VOD to sync it with, anyway you know what I mean. I thought very highly of their analysis of the game, Day[9] and rS.NonY said a lot of what I felt when watching the finals, and so much more. Their understanding of the game is far greater than my own, explanations of the deeper concepts and ideas behind what the players had in mind really enlightened me about what went on in the game beyond what seemed obvious.
So, myself lacking the required video editing skills, I got my friend who's an excellent anime encoder (and wishes to remain incognito) to help me out with this project, and he did an amazing job! to make a very long story short (because it was more complicated than what I'll explain here) basically we (ok.. he, but I was encouraging!) took the original wmvs of the finals, stripped them of the audio, then synced them with the commentary audio into one file (with the original sound lower on volume and the commentary way higher, we could also go for pure commentary and no background sound but after comparing we found that the background sounds are really crucial to keep the game atmosphere), the audio files are longer than the actual videos because Day and NonY continued talking about the games after they were over, which means you had to add more video or YouTube and other video hosting sites would reject the 'audio only' parts, so we added a TeamLiquid logo (with fade-in) until the audio was finished, which means we had to convert the wmvs into avi format, then re-introduce the synced sound files inside, and all sorts of tweaks in the middle to keep the video/audio from being damaged in quality (big success), and we're very happy with the results :-)
Programs used: (XviD for codec. Also had to use 3 versions of vdub, just because mainline vdub sucks)
VirtualDubMPEG2 for ASF/WMV extraction & frameserving. VirtualDub (normal) for encoding. VirtualDubMod for muxing. (AviMuxGUI is excellent but the results don't always turn out compatible with all players, or YouTube) Audacity for audio editing. WM Encoder for making WMAs. WM Stream Editor for remuxing WMAs into WMVs. LAME for encoding MP3s. And of course Avisynth for video editing.
For anyone interested, the general process went as following:
VdubMPEG2: Load WMV, demux audio, start frameserver. Avisynth: Add logo to frameserved video. VirtualDub: Encode with XviD to AVI. Audacity: Mix audio + commentary. Lame: Encode audio to mp3. VirtualDubMod: Mux mp3 with video.
I'm a YouTube uploader, but if any of you wants to upload the games on other video hosting sites, the more the better, I'll upload the files onto RapidShare tommorow and post the link.
Day[9] and I recorded some English commentary to listen to while you watch Bisu vs Savior. The content is very heavy on strategy and analysis of the gameplay so even if you've already watched the games, we feel you'll still benefit from watching the games again with the addition of our commentary.
Would it be okay with you if I linked this on another board? I posted a live report thread yesterday there, I'm sure some people would be interested in listening to you both
Thanks btw! I've been waiting for you to post it.
edit: Nevermind I'm just gonna upload this to rapidshare. Don't want them leeching off your host. Thanks again guys! I will make sure to give you both credit.
you pimps! ive been thinking of trying to organize one of these over skype/vent for a while now but im really looking forward to what you guys have to say :D
holy shit guys that was awesome. its reassuring to know im thinking on very similar lines to "qualifed" commentators. i was thinking of trying to organize these over skype/vent etc but its nice to see that you guys are doing this for us
<3 <3 <3
edit: just finished game 3 commentary...you guys need to start working with tasteless. day probably has a few connections
I just watched all 3 games with the audio files and I must say that they were very insightful. Thanks for time making these commentaries. I hope to see soemthing like this again in the near future.
you guys are awesome it's as if we have our own MSLthree announcers! tasteless belongs in the middle as the hype-up guy, nony on the right as the calm analysis, and day on the left as a little of both
amazing, thanks so much this makes rewatching the games really fun
hopefully we have more of these in the future and for other matchups too =)
haha, this is awesome, day is a funny guy. XD Very insightful as well, i hope to see some more of these. ^^ btw who would be the "spokesperson" for terran if you make these more often, or will you just continue with you two?

Day mentioned the first person vods a couple of times. Where could I get them? (I don't have GOM player, and can't install it either, since there is no unix version)

Just listened to them all. Nice insights guys. The main themes of the discussion, in particular the dissection of bisu's corsair play and how it was conducive to a strong midgame and opening him for his dt harass, were cool. Kind of wraped up the series tightly and showed why exactly savior was whipped so bad so quickly.
As you guys hinted to a number of times, Bisu looked a lot more dominant than he really was. Everything just came together for him well and he played flawlessly.
Nice work boys. Everyone should listen to these if they've got the time. Good stuff.
EDIT:
Almost forgot, as per your request at the end of the 3rd game. You guys were totally right in everything you said.
Not to be the only person who doesn't like this, but you guys don't really explain whats happening in the games at all. You go into WHY they do this build, WHY they do that build, WHY bisu only has 6 gates, but not what he is doing in the game at the moment. And while i can watch and see what is going on during the game, i just think it would be nice to have a comentary i can listen to and not have to watch and know what happend in the game.
That was not the point of this commentary, he even put a disclaimer in his post. The point of this commentary was strategic discussion, not play by play.

Wow, these were excellent! I really like how the discussion was focused on strategy and insight instead of just pointing out crap the viewer can see for himself.
Guys... you said so much of what I was thinking while watching the games, and much more! I absolutely love your comments, you should really open a small website and host the VODs + commentary or something of the sort, excellent job!

WinRAR is not Free Software, as a result of which you A. shouldn't use it B. cannot use it unless you are running windows.

Soon you won't need winrar or anything at all to watch (yes watch) this amazing commentary :-) Project "MSL Finals English Commentary Synchronized & Encoded into Finals VODs" completed and being uploaded to YouTube right now :-)
I watched this in 2009 when I was learning about StarCraft. But I watched this today and thought: OMGM it's NONY ad DAY[9] in 2007!!! Whoa, they haven't changed a bit. Nony's extremely calmnessand Day's "stream of words".
funny thing is that I didn't know Nony casted until yesterday, in the TL Open =P,
Gomtv MSL finals 2007 Bisu vs Savior, casted by Day[9] and rs.NonY

Agreed, I had forgotten how awesome those games were. Let's hope there is one more MSL for Bisu to win and achieve something no other progamer has ever done or will ever accomplish in the future...4x MSL, platinum badge?
Oh man, I remember watching this awhile back. So awesome hearing the thoughts of top foreigner protoss and zerg players. Back in the Dark Age of vod casting... I really got to watch this again.
That glorious MSL. I remember this, but I also remember noting that Nony was the better commentator and that Day's voice sounded annoying. Funny how things have turned out today!
I vaguely remember watching the first few minutes of this when I had no idea who these guys were and their commentary was way too high level for me. Amazing bump!
Where can I find bisu vs nalra commentated by nony?
these finals were one of the most impressing and amazing moments of BW's history. I was so completely blown away, and I don't think I'd ever seen this particular commentary. thanks for this epic bump
Wow this is awesome, especially for those who weren't in the scene at the time, nice share and some great commentary. I feel a more educated person after watching these
sorry for bumping two threads, bumped this one first then realised it was in featured threads that no one could see, then bumped the old LR thread that is now closed. but hopefully this remains opened for all to enjoy
just finished watching game 3.. it was absolute poetry by bisu. just wow... constant follow up harass.. it was non stop. also weird to see him in mbc clothes

I wish we could watch BW with the SC2 observer interface. The games are soooo great but it is hard to keep up and compared to today's stanards, just a bit inconvenient to watch (the low quality aside).

I was thinking this while watching BW the past month. I had taken a long time away from BW VODs and also have gotten used to the 'luxuries' of the SC2 obs/replay options.
However, it really makes me more attentive to what's going on in a BW game. Unless the game is really exciting, a lof of SC2 games I end up just tabbing in and out of, see the army composition tab or resource collection rates or worker counts and get a good idea of what's up. With BW, I feel like I watch it a lot more closesly since the info isn't all there.
I accidently checked Bisus wiki page to see when exactly it was he switched teams and got spoiled on the result, I thought it was another final and not this one. Still great commentating though!

i just was a little disappointed that you get spoilered throughought the cast ^^ pretty different style of casting compared to today.
targeted audience propaly was the crowd who already watched the games i guess
i suppose the video sacrificed play-by-play for more in depth tactical analysis, which is a bit of a shame because of all the wonderful things that happened throughout the 3 games
wow, this thread is prophetic. i was looking all over for some games of savior/jaedong that have been given analysis audio on them for SC2 inspiration. if there's anything else like this i would really appreciate links D:

Yea its not really a traditional cast, more like an analysis of the PvZ revolution by 2 pros of both races involved who assume the viewers already know the outcome.

It's the cool thing to do in the Broodwar forums now adays if you haven't noticed..... :D
Nowadays? old epic threads have been bumped since I first got here at the end of 2008. It's a time honoured tradition, whether on purpose or because someone made a dumb bump.

+1 I don't think young SC2 kids will understand. Savior was raping everyone, it were the dark times for Aiur with ZvP imba and Savior untouchable. It was such a climax for all Protoss players out there
