So after spending way too much time on TL and nearing my 1000th post, I started to wonder what I should do to honor it. I browsed TL and looked over various 1000th post blogs thinking of ideas. Some with polls on what they should do, some with people using it for humor, some thanking TL etc. etc.
Later that night, in bed, falling asleep I had a vision. One that would increase the quality of my posts and have considerable upside. I thought, why not make a Post Jar? Much like a swear jar, only putting money in it for every TL post, rather than swearing. I thought, this should make me refrain from making pointless posts such as 'THIS IS AWESOME' or 'SICK GAME' (which I tend to do so often). Thus increasing the quality of my posts while also having a fund to use on all things TL/Starcraft related. Surely I will post more times in a GSL season than the dollar amount for a GOM ticket to watch those very games.
Some people will say this should be used as a punishment, and posting on TL shouldn't be punished. However I prefer to look at it from the perspective of rewarding yourself for making a quality post. For every good post you make, another dollar (or whatever unit you choose) is added and brings you that much closer to being able to afford a cute little reward!
So now, with my increased post quality, my GSL/GSTL tickets should be taken care of. Possibly with a little extra added on the side for a new keyboard/headset (if needed) and all that good stuff. Because hey, we all love good stuff! On top of that, you never have to count how much you have! Because our favorite site/community (TL.net) keeps a running tally just for our convenience! Its right there in your post count! I will be putting 1$ in for every post, starting with post 1001. If I am curious as to how much I've saved up, I just go to my public profile, see that I have (random example) 1076 posts and instantly know theres 76$ in my jar!
After a quick search of TL to see if anyone else had come up with this idea, the closest thing I ran into was this thread by Shanedon: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=326059
So without further ado, I present my very own TL Post Jar:
As you can see its currently empty! I've added the TL logo to the jar for a nice touch! Theres also a small square of lined paper on the back to write in any withdrawls for tickets/goodies for future reference, to keep it easy to calculate how much is left in the jar (TL posts [since jar started] - withdrawls = current amount!)!
Just figured my 1000th post would be a suitable time to unveil this jar, both for the honorary purpose aswell as making the maths side of the TL Post Jar easy!
Feel free to post and discuss similar ideas/things you have tried or are keen to try!

This is a really cool idea! I don't post nearly enough to make this worth while for me though
So wait, everytime you post shitty you set money aside to buy a GSL pass?
Cool jar, and grats on 1k!
Awesome idea Congrats on the 1k post keep us posted on how well this works out for you!

This is a much better idea than my 1000th post lol

This is so cool. Gratz on 1k and really awesome idea!

I bought an ex-girlfriend a decent sound-system for her car with my swear jar earnings once. This sounds like a far better idea!
This is awesome, I wouldn't do it, but I think this is pretty practical beyond TL
That's a really cool idea. I really like it man, good job!
Postivie reinforcement FTW!
Ummmm... so your posts will go to your GSL/GSTL tickets and new keyboard and headeset.... interesting. For me though... I think this would be an incentive to post a lot ^_^
So awesome (on my way to my own 1000 posts )
Pretty clever. Good luck!!

Thats actually pretty cool. spam in LR threads!!! :D

I feel like I have the opposite problem. Too often I say to myself, "my opinion is meaningless on this topic, no one wants to read it" and refrain from posting something I've already typed out. Its amazing how often I see people with an exponentially higher post count than myself, who have been browsing TL (or at least registered) for a small fraction of the time.
edit: That sounded kinda condescending which was unintended. I think at the core it comes from still thinking of myself as new around here anyway~
That is a really cool neat idea :3 hope you will get to buy your gsl ticket once

another way to look at it, he'll be poor becuz all his money is in the jar
how do you plan on keeping it up? With motivation etc I mean, you could just use your money right now and buy whatever you want. Why save up like that. You might stop posting because you dont want to put your money in the jar. If it was someone else putting money in it, I would understand.
Note, the poor bastard still only at 1000 posts... :p
after looking at the jar and before reading at all, i was all prepared to say "MUST BE WHERE YOU KEEP YOUR GOOD POSTS LOLOL"
not as funny after reading though eh
to clarify, because its a pretty sweet idea.
When you reach 1000000 posts, change your address
I don't think spam posters like TDL can afford an idea like this.
This is a cool idea, I hope it works out well for you. I envy your GSL season tickets and I may just have to follow your example, though my inordinate love of Live Report threads would be the end of me.
Gratz on 1K. I think you will be able to buy a car or something once you reach 5k! :D
Not to rain on anyone's parade but that seems highly impractical. Do you always have one dollar bills with you? What if you need it for food? Are you not a starving college student? (I am ofc). I mean, best of luck, but i don't see this working out at all.
So much better than any of my thousand posts. Gz
To clear up a few things (and put the first dollar in the jar!), I'll respond to a few peoples different views.
There are a couple different ways people have been looking at it. One being, this would make them want to post more or that they would just post more as an excuse to buy/get more rewards. One post even asking what is stopping me from just buying the stuff with my money now and not bothering.
The other (mainly brought up by galtdunn), is that it is too costly and toohard to have the right amount laying around to put in the jar after each post.
In response to these I would say that I find myself in some sort of middle ground where I am not a starving college student, but am not rich enough to just have a huge amount of dispensable money. So I can't afford to just run out and spend 1000$ and say "ok, now i dont have to worry about putting a dollar in for my next 1000 posts". So I'm not just going to be posting like mad to get shiny new stuff. But at the same time I'm in a position where (as long as im not posting like a wild man, quality > quantity) 1$ per post shouldn't cut to deep into my bank account to affect me per post.
And in regards to not 'always having one dollar bills with me', in Australia we don't use one dollar bills, we have coins. Not only that, I can always use silver coins to make up a dollar and I'm not sure about the rest of Australia but i always have an abundance of silver coins laying around because frankly, I find it impractical to carry around tens of coins in a little wallet. I generally just throw them on my desk when my wallet gets to fat with them and carry on using notes instead. So I don't forsee any problems coming up with an exact dollar for every post, assuming there wont be crazy amounts every day.
In goes the first dollar!
funny idea. your profile info says you average 3 posts a day, in a month you nearly get 100 dollars when continuing your current posting habits... i guess there will be enough opportunities for some good stuff on the side gl

do you have to put in a dollar if you answer a question like this one?
Sometimes when I post I ask myself "is this worth posting?". 1 time out of 3 I just don't post it then. So I already kind of do this, except my jar is imaginary and also empty.
I don't understand why the fuck stupid, cunt assholes would use something as dumb as fuck as a swear jar though. Swearing is so colorful if used properly.
Edit: Oh wait I just understood the principle of the post jar. I still dislike the idea though simply because I'm sure that better quality posts could be achieved by simply asking the question "is this post going to add something meaningful to the discussion or not?"
Im so confused.
You're actually finding an excuse to spend on stuff right ^^
I really like your idea. It's so creative. On top of that it makes you think before posting, if you want to keep with your goal to improve the overall quality of your posts.
Heh thats cute. Cool idea!

I like the idea. It monetizes (thus quantifying) a subjective idea. Instead of asking your question before posting, the question he now needs to ask is "Am I willing to pay myself $1 for this post?" Assuming he's not dishonest to himself then I think this can go a long way into making his posts better. I, personally, would feel bad giving myself a dollar for a "quality post" if I'm only lying to myself.

You should play TL Mafia, that will get you broke/rich in no time.

Haha, that's brilliant. I guess you will need to think twice before opening a LR thread then

Lol! Too true.
Good idea and GL on continuing on with it. I'd love if you could post a 6-month review of how the jar turned out when you get there.
hahaha great Idea, If I put every dollar for every post I made I'd have a hard time fitting money into the jar!

Hey love the idea dude real creative, 5/5 just because it's original

What if we ask R1CH to make this build-in to TL as a new way to fund TLPro?
1) Opt in TL Post Jar to fund TLPro 2) ??? 3) Buy out the former oGs

Gratz on 1k posts btw ^_^

That's a really funny and creative idea I must admit, gl with that
Pro tip: You care more about your own posting than anyone else on this site. Maybe more than everyone combined. I've made shit posts and I've made brilliant posts, and I haven't gotten a positive or negative return on either. Spammers like Torte actually see a better return than quality posters.
I like the idea about the jar and adding $1 to each extra post you make. And congrads on the 1000th post.
I feel slightly bad posting "Awesome Idea" after reading this and you talking about quality posting, but I don't know what else to say so Awesome Idea man!
If you want to watch the GSL/GSTL, why don't you just buy a ticket? Have you never made that investment and just now have the self-fulfilling path to do so?
Awesome idea! And already 4$ in :>

Don't get banned
